AEAF#C# | AEAG♭D♭ Drop A Celloblaster - Guitar tuning, chords & scales

Description - Drop A Celloblaster

Inspired by a Schecter Celloblaster 5 string baritone which is tuned from low to high AEBF#C# but with the B2 being dropped to A.

The "Drop A Celloblaster" tuning is a distinctive and powerful setup for a 5-string guitar, designed to deliver a massive low-end combined with articulate, high-range melodic capabilities. This tuning draws inspiration from the Schecter Celloblaster 5-string baritone, adapting its character by dropping the third string from B2 to A2, creating an even more resonant and unique sonic landscape.

Verbal Analysis

This tuning is built for impact. The incredibly low A1 on the 5th string anchors a formidable foundation, making it ideal for heavy genres such as djent, progressive metal, and doom metal, where deep, percussive riffs are paramount. The "Drop A" aspect allows for effortless single-finger power chords on the lowest three strings (A-E-A), providing a satisfying, full-bodied crunch. The name "Celloblaster" hints at its wide dynamic range, bridging the gap between the guttural growl of a cello's lower register and the shimmering highs typically associated with guitar solos.

It's a tuning that encourages experimentation, pushing the boundaries of what a 5-string guitar can achieve. The significant jump in pitch between the 3rd and 2nd strings creates a distinct separation, allowing for bassline-like riffing on the lower strings while simultaneously enabling soaring lead lines or complex arpeggios on the higher two. This makes it versatile for intricate compositions, offering rich textural possibilities.

Technical Analysis

The open strings for this tuning are, from lowest to highest:

  • 5th String: A1
  • 4th String: E2
  • 3rd String: A2
  • 2nd String: F4#
  • 1st String: C5#

Analyzing the intervals reveals the tuning's unique structure:

  • A1 to E2: A perfect 5th (7 semitones), characteristic of bass string pairings.
  • E2 to A2: A perfect 4th (5 semitones), creating a classic power chord shape with the lowest string (A-E-A).
  • A2 to F4#: An expansive interval of 22 semitones (a Major 6th spanning two octaves), which is the core of the "Celloblaster" character, providing a dramatic leap from the bass register to the higher melodic range.
  • F4# to C5#: A perfect 5th (7 semitones), offering familiar melodic and harmonic possibilities on the highest strings.

The open strings together form an A6 chord (A - E - A - F# - C#). This makes for a very rich, open sound that can be strummed directly or used as a base for arpeggiation. The low A-E-A combination on the bottom three strings makes power chords extremely accessible by simply barring a single fret. Due to the significant jump between the 3rd and 2nd strings, traditional chord shapes may require re-thinking, but this encourages innovative fingerings and open-string drones. The high F# and C# strings are excellent for creating bright, cutting leads or higher-register rhythmic textures.

How to Tune "Drop A Celloblaster"

To achieve the "Drop A Celloblaster" tuning, carefully adjust each string as follows:

  • 5th String (Lowest): The target note is A1. Tune down 2 semitones. This movement is within a safe range for most string gauges.
  • 4th String: The target note is E2. Keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
  • 3rd String: The target note is A2. Keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
  • 2nd String: The target note is F4#. Tune up 4 semitones. Please exercise caution when tuning up 4 semitones, as this is on the higher end of typical string tension changes. If you frequently use this tuning, consider experimenting with a different string gauge to optimize playability and string longevity.
  • 1st String (Highest): The target note is C5#. Tune up 6 semitones. Tuning up 6 semitones significantly increases string tension and stress on the neck and bridge. It is strongly recommended to use a lighter gauge string specifically for this position if you intend to use this tuning regularly, or proceed with extreme care, monitoring your instrument for any signs of stress.

Always tune slowly and check your intonation after tuning to ensure optimal playability and to prevent potential damage to your instrument.
