Description - Baritone Variant

A baritone 6 string tuning variant

The 'Baritone Wide-Range B' tuning is a distinctive and powerful variant designed for a baritone 6-string guitar. It pushes the lower register significantly while introducing an exceptionally high string on the treble side, creating an expansive sonic landscape.

Verbal Analysis

This tuning is characterized by its deep, resonant bass strings, which are dropped substantially from standard EADGBe. This creates a rich, rumbling foundation perfect for heavy riffs, atmospheric soundscapes, and extended-range compositions. The consistent perfect fourth intervals on the lowest four strings provide a familiar yet deeper feel, making power chords and low melodic lines incredibly impactful. However, the most striking feature is the dramatic leap in pitch on the higher strings. While the second string (B3) remains at a standard pitch, the first string (C5#) is tuned remarkably high, introducing a piercing, almost piano-like treble note. This wide separation between the low and high strings offers unique harmonic possibilities, allowing for shimmering arpeggios over a crushing low end, or complex counter-melodies. It encourages an experimental approach to songwriting, leveraging both its extreme depth and bright, expansive highs.

Technical Analysis

From a technical perspective, the tuning is B1-E2-A2-D3-B3-C5#. The initial four strings (B1, E2, A2, D3) maintain a standard perfect fourth interval relationship, mimicking the lower register of a bass guitar or dropped tunings. This consistency makes it intuitive for playing power chords and bass lines within this range. The jump from D3 (3rd string) to B3 (2nd string) is a minor sixth (9 semitones), breaking the perfect fourth pattern and creating a larger interval that can be utilized for open voicings or specific melodic phrasing. The most significant technical aspect is the first string, C5#. The interval from the second string (B3) to the first string (C5#) is a compound minor second (or a minor 9th, specifically 14 semitones), creating an extremely wide and bright voicing on the high end. This extensive range offers unique opportunities for chordal construction and melodic exploration. While not forming a conventional open chord, the tuning contains notes B, D, E, A, C#, which align well with a B minor tonality, potentially allowing for suspended or extended chord voicings such as Bm7(add4, 9) without the fifth (F#). The very low B and high C# can create both dissonant and expansive harmonic textures, making it ideal for experimental genres, metal, and ambient music. Open chords are less intuitive, but the low B-E-A-D provides a strong base for power chords (e.g., B5, E5, A5, D5 by fretting adjacent strings on the same fret for an octave or fifth). The unique note cluster lends itself to arpeggiated figures and drone notes, rather than traditional strumming patterns.

Here are the notes for each string in this tuning, from thickest to thinnest:

  • String 6: B1 (The lowest B note, creating a deep sub-bass foundation)
  • String 5: E2 (A low E note, providing significant depth)
  • String 4: A2 (The standard A note, but as the middle-low string)
  • String 3: D3 (A standard D note, bridging the low and high registers)
  • String 2: B3 (The standard B note, holding its usual pitch)
  • String 1: C5# (An exceptionally high C sharp, offering a bright, piercing top end)

How to Tune: From Standard EADGBe

To achieve the 'Baritone Wide-Range B' tuning from a standard EADGBe setup, follow these string movements:

  • String 6 (Low E): Your standard E2 string should be tuned down 5 semitones. This will result in a B1 note. (Caution: Tuning down 5 semitones is a significant change; a heavier gauge string is advised for optimal tension and tone.)
  • String 5 (A): Your standard A2 string should be tuned down 5 semitones. This will result in an E2 note. (Caution: Tuning down 5 semitones is a significant change; a heavier gauge string is advised for optimal tension and tone.)
  • String 4 (D): Your standard D3 string should be tuned down 5 semitones. This will result in an A2 note. (Caution: Tuning down 5 semitones is a significant change; a heavier gauge string is advised for optimal tension and tone.)
  • String 3 (G): Your standard G3 string should be tuned down 5 semitones. This will result in a D3 note. (Caution: Tuning down 5 semitones is a significant change; a heavier gauge string is advised for optimal tension and tone.)
  • String 2 (B): Your standard B3 string should be kept as is; no change (0 semitones). This will result in a B3 note.
  • String 1 (High E): Your standard E4 string should be tuned down 3 semitones. This will result in a C#4 note.
