CGDAEB Mandoguitar Tuner
CGDAEB Mandoguitar - Mandoguitar tuning, chords & scales
The Mandoguitar tuning radically redefines the standard guitar, transforming it into an instrument structured entirely in perfect fifths, much like a mandolin, violin, or cello. This offers a distinctly different sonic and harmonic experience compared to traditional guitar tunings.
Technically, this tuning sets all six strings in perfect fifths (7 semitones) from the lowest C to the highest B (C2-G2-D3-A3-E4-B4). This consistent interval creates a symmetrical fretboard layout, making it highly intuitive for melodic playing, scales, and arpeggios once the new patterns are learned. While standard guitar chord shapes will no longer be applicable, the inherent symmetry allows for easily movable two-finger power chords (root and fifth) by simply fretting adjacent strings at the same fret. Major and minor triads will require completely new fingerings but will be consistent across the fretboard.
The open strings themselves (C-G-D-A-E-B) provide a rich harmonic palette. While not forming a single common chord, they can be seen as an extended C major 7 chord with added extensions, or a stack of perfect fifths. This tuning excels in genres requiring clarity, open voicings, counterpoint, and a bright, ringing quality, such as folk, classical-inspired pieces, or contemporary experimental music. Players will discover a new world of voicings and melodic possibilities, encouraging a fresh approach to composition and improvisation.

How to Tune Your Guitar to Mandoguitar:
- String 6 (Low E): Tune down 4 semitones from E2 to C2. Note: Tuning down 4 semitones is a significant tension reduction. Be mindful of potential string slackness; a heavier gauge string might offer more stability, or ensure your current string gauge can handle this.
- String 5 (A): Tune down 2 semitones from A2 to G2.
- String 4 (D): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
- String 3 (G): Tune up 2 semitones from G3 to A3.
- String 2 (B): Tune up 5 semitones from B3 to E4. Caution: Tuning up 5 semitones significantly increases string tension. It is strongly advised to use a lighter gauge string for this position to prevent breakage and potential stress on your instrument's neck.
- String 1 (High E): Tune up 7 semitones from E4 to B4. Warning: Tuning up 7 semitones (a perfect fifth) is a very substantial increase in tension. It is highly recommended to use a significantly lighter gauge string for this position to avoid string breakage and potential damage to your instrument.
