He fuses carnatic, flamenco, jazz and Andean music in his artistic interpretations of spirituals, hymns and scripture songs. Neilās calling to music outreach led him to the nation of Timor-Leste, for which he developed a strong love for the people and culture. He frequently sings in the Timorese tongue of Tetum and dons tais, a traditional Timorese weaving. The depth Daniel Shams of Heliotricity is able to achieve with his guitar, voice and poetry is astounding. With his wide range and agile falsettos his voice has been compared to Tim Buckley, who no doubt he was unconsciously channeling in the exquisite track āHeliumā. One hears hints of Jeff Buckley, Thom Yorke, as well as Nick Drake at times. It is a voice agile and aspiring, reaching for the universal, the common threads connecting all people. You get the sense also of an urgency listening to Daniel, a striving that reveals a relentlessness in his pursuit of an immediate, articulate and pure expression. The result is that his recordings then are more like raw jewels excavated from deep fissures, they arenāt overly polished and pretty in the sense some people prefer. They are the real thing. And when he sings of love, it is not to a woman, it is to all women. It is as if the great Sibyls are resurrected at once. When one listens they live love for that instant. www.heliotricity.com

Born and raised in Staunton, Virginia, I've resided in Burlington, West Virginia since 2012. Iāve been playing banjo since 2008 when I was eleven while living in Staunton, originally being taught Scruggs or finger-style banjo, then about a year later I started teaching myself clawhammer after my former teacher had introduced me to various Old Time artists and CDs, and I have been playing it ever since. I've been building mountain-style banjos, gourd banjos, and mountain dulcimers since 2013, and enjoy sharing them here along with the tunes I learn and play. I thank God for the gifts and talents that I possess...
