C#D#G#C#D#G# Bass Electric Tuner

C#D#G#C#D#G# | D♭E♭A♭D♭E♭A♭ C#sus2 - Bass Electric tuning, chords & scales

Description - C#sus2

I experiment with open bass tunings alot

This is an experimental open tuning for a 6-string Bass Electric, dubbed C#sus2 Bass Tuning. As the name suggests, it creates a rich C# suspended 2nd chord when all strings are played open, offering a powerful, resonant sound that can serve as a solid foundation for various musical styles. This tuning, described by its creator as an exploration in open bass tunings, encourages a fresh approach to the instrument, moving beyond standard patterns.

Technically, the tuning comprises the notes C#3, D#3, G#3, C#4, D#4, G#4 from lowest to highest string. This arrangement provides the root (C#), a major second (D#), and a perfect fifth (G#) across multiple octaves. Playing all open strings yields a C#sus2 chord (C#, D#, G#) with the fifth (G#) and the root (C#) also present in higher octaves, creating a dense and full voicing. The consistent interval pattern (Root-Major2nd-Perfect5th) allows for easy exploration of melodic ideas and drones, making it excellent for ambient, progressive, or even heavy genres where a massive, open bass sound is desired. Common chord shapes or arpeggios in standard tuning might require re-learning, but the open intervals make it easy to find powerful voicings by simply barring across frets or using two-finger shapes.

The presence of the root, second, and fifth makes it relatively easy to find variations: a C# Major chord can be achieved by lowering the D# strings to C# (a minor second interval from D#), while a C# Minor might involve other adjustments. The D# notes also open up possibilities for D#sus2 or G#sus2 by shifting focus, demonstrating the tuning's versatility beyond its namesake.

How to Tune

To achieve this C#sus2 Bass Tuning from your current setup, follow these string movements. Please note that significant changes in tension may require string gauge adjustments for optimal playability and intonation, especially for movements of 4 or more semitones.

  • Sixth String (lowest): Tune to C#3. This involves tuning up 2 semitones.
  • Fifth String: Tune to D#3. This involves tuning down 1 semitone.
  • Fourth String: Tune to G#3. This involves tuning down 1 semitone.
  • Third String: Tune to C#4. This involves tuning down 1 semitone.
  • Second String: Tune to D#4. This involves tuning down 4 semitones. (Note: Tuning down 4 semitones is a significant change; consider a heavier gauge string for optimal performance and to avoid buzzing.)
  • First String (highest): Tune to G#4. This involves tuning down 3 semitones.
