C#F#C#G#A#D# | D♭G♭D♭A♭B♭E♭ F#6/9 - Guitar tuning, chords & scales

Description - F#6/9

Was using an open c sharp tuning, decided to mess with it.

This unique guitar tuning, which we'll refer to as F#6/9, is the result of creative experimentation, having evolved from an existing open C# tuning as described by its creator. It offers a rich and distinctive harmonic landscape, centered around an F# tonality with extended voicings.

Verbal Analysis:

Upon strumming the open strings, you'll immediately encounter the lush, full sound of an F#6/9 chord. The lowest note, C#3 on the 6th string, provides a deep and resonant foundation, acting as the perfect fifth to the F#3 on the 5th string. This establishes a powerful, clear root of F# for the open chord. The full set of open notes – C#3, F#3, C#4, G#4, A#4, D#5 – harmonically forms an F# Major 9th chord with an added 6th (F# - root, A# - Major 3rd, C# - Perfect 5th, D# - Major 6th, G# - Major 9th), creating a highly versatile canvas for both rhythmic accompaniment and melodic exploration.

This tuning is exceptionally well-suited for open chord voicings, arpeggios, and drone playing, particularly in keys related to F# Major. The specific arrangement of the strings, with several perfect 4ths and 5ths alongside a Major 2nd, facilitates easy access to various inversions and extensions without overly complex fingerings. Barring shapes and sliding them up and down the neck will reveal familiar F# Major, Minor, and even some dominant 7th voicings with interesting tensions. The presence of the Major 3rd (A# on string 2) and Major 6th (D# on string 1) contributes to particularly sweet and complete-sounding open chords. It's an excellent tuning for exploring modern jazz, R&B, progressive rock, or creating ambient soundscapes.

Technical Analysis:

The tuning notes for each string, from low to high, are:

  • 6th String: C#3
  • 5th String: F#3
  • 4th String: C#4
  • 3rd String: G#4
  • 2nd String: A#4
  • 1st String: D#5

Let's examine the intervals between adjacent strings:

  • C#3 to F#3: Perfect 4th (5 semitones)
  • F#3 to C#4: Perfect 5th (7 semitones)
  • C#4 to G#4: Perfect 5th (7 semitones)
  • G#4 to A#4: Major 2nd (2 semitones)
  • A#4 to D#5: Perfect 4th (5 semitones)

The prevalence of perfect 4ths and 5ths in the lower and higher register creates a powerful, open sound with a strong sense of consonance. The Major 2nd between the 3rd and 2nd strings (G# to A#) adds a distinctive melodic cluster, providing a unique harmonic tension and flavor. This tuning deviates significantly from standard EADGBe tuning. Due to the very substantial semitone changes required on all strings from standard tuning, adjusting your string gauges for significantly higher tension is strongly recommended for optimal playability, intonation, and to prevent string breakage. A high-quality digital tuner is absolutely essential for accurate setup.

How to Tune:

To achieve the F#6/9 tuning, you will need to make significant adjustments from standard EADGBe tuning. For precise results, use a digital tuner. Due to the extreme nature of these adjustments, using heavier gauge strings designed for significantly higher tension is strongly recommended to prevent breakage, ensure proper intonation, and maintain guitar health. Please proceed with extreme caution.

  • 6th String (Low E): Tune up 9 semitones to C#3. This is a very significant upward adjustment (almost three-quarters of an octave). A much heavier gauge string is essential for this string, as normal gauges will likely break or be under immense tension.
(Creator's original adjustment from previous tuning: Tune down 3 semitones to C#3)
  • 5th String (A): Tune up 9 semitones to F#3. Another major upward adjustment. A heavier gauge string is advised to handle the increased tension.
(Creator's original adjustment from previous tuning: Tune down 3 semitones to F#3)
  • 4th String (D): Tune up 11 semitones to C#4. This is nearly an entire octave up. Extreme caution and a heavier gauge string are absolutely necessary to prevent breakage and neck warping.
(Creator's original adjustment from previous tuning: Tune down 1 semitone to C#4)
  • 3rd String (G): Tune up 13 semitones to G#4. This is more than an octave up. This string will be under immense tension; specialized high-tension strings and extreme caution are required. Consider the integrity of your guitar's neck.
(Creator's original adjustment from previous tuning: Tune up 1 semitone to G#4)
  • 2nd String (B): Tune up 11 semitones to A#4. Nearly an octave up. Exercise extreme caution and use a heavier gauge string.
(Creator's original adjustment from previous tuning: Tune down 1 semitone to A#4)
  • 1st String (High E): Tune up 11 semitones to D#5. Nearly an octave up. Exercise extreme caution and use a heavier gauge string.
(Creator's original adjustment from previous tuning: Tune down 1 semitone to D#5)

The "Creator's original adjustment from previous tuning" notes, derived from the provided 'string_movements' data, describe the minor tweaks made from an unspecified "open C# tuning" that the creator was already using. For tuning from standard EADGBe, the much larger semitone changes outlined above are the relevant instructions. Given these significant changes, it is highly probable that this tuning was designed for a specific short-scale instrument or a custom, very heavy string gauge set, potentially even a baritone guitar, to maintain playable tension and prevent damage.
