DACEAE Lycoris Radiata (Higanbana) C6/9 (or Am/D?) - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
Description - Lycoris Radiata (Higanbana) C6/9 (or Am/D?)
I make this tuning when I was reading about the flower "Lycoris radiata", and noticed that the family of that flower is called "Amaryllidaceae", so I make the tuning from the "daceae" part, it's a very sad open tuning, because it have and Am, it maches very well with the symbolism of the flower, because it's called "flower of the death" and it's associated with bad/sad things. I searched this tuning and no one has used it, maybe I make a song for that flower :D. Good luck!
Verbal Analysis: The Poignant Higanbana Echo
Inspired by the ethereal and melancholic beauty of the Lycoris radiata flower, also known as Higanbana or 'flower of the death', this tuning truly encapsulates a deep sense of sadness and introspection. The creator's ingenious link to the flower's family, 'Amaryllidaceae', directly informs the prominent A minor (Am) quality found within the open strings. It is a tuning designed to evoke solemn melodies and heartfelt, sorrowful expressions, perfectly mirroring the poignant symbolism of the flower itself – often associated with farewells and lost memories. This tuning invites players into a world of reflective and emotional soundscapes.
Technical Analysis: Am/D Resonance
This unique open tuning presents the notes from the lowest string (6th) to the highest string (1st) as: D2 A2 C3 E3 A3 E4.
The arrangement of these notes creates a rich, complex harmonic foundation:
- Core Harmony: The open strings prominently feature an A minor triad (A-C-E) across strings 5-4-3 (A2-C3-E3) and an octave higher on strings 2-1 (A3-E4). With the low D2 in the bass, the tuning forms a clear A minor chord with a D bass (Am/D). This provides a deep, melancholic root for the minor harmony, perfectly aligning with the tuning's emotional intent.
- Extended Interpretation: From a broader perspective, the notes (D-A-C-E) can also suggest a D chord, specifically a D9sus4 (no 3rd) or a Dadd2(no 3rd), given the absence of the F# and G. However, the strong presence of A minor voicings points strongly to the Am/D interpretation as the primary harmonic character.
- Chordal Possibilities:
- Open Chord: The tuning's open strings immediately provide a beautiful, sorrowful Am/D.
- Droning & Power Chords: The 6th and 5th strings (D2-A2) form a perfect fifth, ideal for droning bass notes or powerful two-string chords that can underpin melodies played on higher strings.
- Repeating Notes: The presence of two A notes (A2 and A3) and two E notes (E3 and E4) offers unique voicings and opportunities for sympathetic resonance, adding depth and sustain.
- Barre Chords: Barring across any fret will naturally yield extended chord voicings. For example, a barre at the 2nd fret produces E-B-D-F#-B-F#, hinting at a B minor 7th or B minor 9th (no 3rd), effectively shifting the melancholic quality to a different root.
- A Minor Accessibility: The accessible A minor shapes across the higher strings make it intuitive to develop melodies and harmonies within the A minor key, with the D bass offering a grounded, yet often unresolved or poignant harmonic contrast.
- Playability: This tuning is particularly well-suited for fingerstyle playing, allowing the distinct voices of the open strings to ring out and blend, creating its characteristic sad and reflective harmony.
How to Tune Your Guitar for Lycoris Am/D Lament
To achieve the Lycoris Am/D Lament tuning from standard E Standard tuning (E-A-D-G-B-E), follow these precise string adjustments:
- String 6 (Low E): Tune down 2 semitones to D2. (Caution: Tuning down 2 semitones is a moderate adjustment. For older strings, always tune carefully and check for intonation.)
- String 5 (A): Keep as is; no change to A2. (No adjustment required.)
- String 4 (D): Tune down 2 semitones to C3. (Caution: Tuning down 2 semitones is a moderate adjustment. For older strings, always tune carefully and check for intonation.)
- String 3 (G): Tune down 3 semitones to E3. (Caution: Tuning down 3 semitones is a significant adjustment. While generally safe for standard gauge strings, you may notice a looser feel. If you plan to use this tuning frequently, consider a slightly lighter gauge string set for optimal playability and tension balance.)
- String 2 (B): Tune down 2 semitones to A3. (Caution: Tuning down 2 semitones is a moderate adjustment. For older strings, always tune carefully and check for intonation.)
- String 1 (High E): Keep as is; no change to E4. (No adjustment required.)
