DEDEBE DEDEBE - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
The DEDEBE tuning transforms a standard guitar into a resonant, drone-focused instrument, particularly suited for rhythm playing as described by its creator. Modified from the E-major focused BEBEBE tuning, this configuration emphasizes the notes D, E, and B across its open strings, creating a rich and somewhat ambiguous harmonic landscape ideal for unique musical expressions.
Technical Analysis:
- The open strings are tuned to D2-E2-D3-E3-B3-E4, moving from the lowest to the highest string.
- This configuration presents a unique set of intervals: a low D, followed by an E (a major 2nd above D), then an octave D, another E (an octave above the previous E), a B (a perfect 5th above E, or a major 6th above D), and finally a high E (an octave above the previous E).
- The prevalence of D and E notes across multiple octaves creates a strong sense of drone and sympathetic resonance, making the guitar sound full and open.
- The open string voicing itself (D, E, B) can be interpreted in various ways: as an Em7 chord (E-B-D, with the G omitted) or a Dsus2(add6) (D-E-B, with the A omitted). This harmonic ambiguity allows for flexible musical exploration, lending itself well to contemporary and experimental genres.
Chordal Opportunities:
- The open tuning itself yields a spacious, droning sound that can be explored as a unique chord voicing, particularly effective for sustained ambient textures or percussive rhythmic patterns.
- By simply barring across the neck, you can achieve interesting suspended or minor-seventh-like chords with ease. For example, barring at the 7th fret will give you B-D-B-D-E-B, which closely resembles an Em7 or Dsus2/B, allowing for quick harmonic shifts.
- The lower register is particularly deep due to the D2 and E2 notes, providing a powerful foundation for rhythmic figures and bass lines. This makes it excellent for styles that benefit from a strong, resonant low end.
- This tuning is ideal for styles that benefit from rich, sustained chords, open string drones, and percussive rhythm work, offering a distinctive sonic palette far removed from standard E tuning. It invites players to explore new fingerings and shapes beyond traditional chord voicings.
How to Tune to DEDEBE:
To achieve the DEDEBE tuning, starting from a standard EADGBe tuning (E2-A2-D3-G3-B3-E4), follow these specific adjustments for each string:
- String 6 (Low E to D2): Tune down 2 semitones from E2 to D2. This is a moderate adjustment.
- String 5 (A to E2): Tune down 5 semitones from A2 to E2. Important Note: A drop of 5 semitones is significant. For optimal performance and to avoid potential issues (such as loss of tension or intonation problems, especially with lighter gauge strings), a heavier gauge string is advised for the 5th string. This will help maintain proper string tension and improve playability.
- String 4 (D to D3): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones). The string remains at D3.
- String 3 (G to E3): Tune down 3 semitones from G3 to E3. This is a moderate adjustment.
- String 2 (B to B3): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones). The string remains at B3.
- String 1 (High E to E4): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones). The string remains at E4.
Always tune gradually and stretch your strings after making adjustments to help them settle into their new pitch and ensure tuning stability.
