DGCFA#E | DGCFB♭E Aeolian 5 - Guitar tuning, chords & scales

Description - Aeolian 5

When you Barre the on the seventh fret which is A on the sixth string you have all the notes of the AeolianNatural Minor mode with the exception of the fifth tone

The "D Minor Quartal Fourths" tuning is a remarkably distinct and experimental approach to guitar, departing significantly from conventional tunings. It creates a deep and expansive soundscape, rich with harmonic possibilities that lean towards a minor tonality, particularly D minor.

Verbal Analysis

This tuning immediately presents a sound that is both dark and resonant, largely due to the prevalence of perfect fourth intervals in its lower register. The sequence of D-G-C-F across the bottom four strings provides a consistent, powerful foundation often favored for driving bass lines, modern voicings, and open, ringing power chords. It evokes a strong modal feel, with the original description hinting at an "Aeolian Natural Minor mode" experience when barred at the seventh fret. While a direct A Aeolian scale from an open bar isn't strictly formed, the tuning's inherent minor leanings and stacked fourths certainly support an exploration of various minor and modal landscapes.

The higher strings introduce a compelling twist. The A# (enharmonically Bb) and E create unique harmonic tensions and colors over the D minor foundation. This combination allows for a blend of established minor chord voicings with unexpected dissonances, making it ideal for experimental genres, ambient textures, or modern jazz where unique harmonic clusters are desired. The two consecutive tritone intervals on the upper strings (F-A# and A#-E) are particularly noteworthy, offering strong tension that can be exploited for dramatic effect or resolved into rich, complex chords.

Technical Analysis

  • Open Notes: D2 G2 C3 F3 A#4 E4
  • Intervals (from 6th string to 1st string):
    • 6th String (D2) to 5th String (G2): Perfect Fourth (P4)
    • 5th String (G2) to 4th String (C3): Perfect Fourth (P4)
    • 4th String (C3) to 3rd String (F3): Perfect Fourth (P4)
    • 3rd String (F3) to 2nd String (A#4): Augmented Fourth (A4) / Tritone
    • 2nd String (A#4) to 1st String (E4): Augmented Fourth (A4) / Tritone

This tuning starts with four perfect fourths, establishing a strong, symmetrical foundation often found in "All Fourths" tunings. This consistency on the lower strings makes it incredibly intuitive for creating parallel voicings, power chords, and modal scale runs simply by barring across these strings. For instance, barring the 5th fret gives a G-C-F-A# voicing (G-C-F-Bb).

Open Chords & Reachable Voicings:

  • D Minor Impression: The combination of D (6th string), F (3rd string), and A# (Bb, 2nd string) provides a clear D minor quality, which can be further enriched by the G (5th string) and C (4th string) to create D minor 7 or D minor 11 voicings (D-G-C-F).
  • Quartal Voicings: Strumming the bottom four strings (D-G-C-F) creates a powerful and open quartal chord, which is very versatile for modern harmonies and percussive rhythm work.
  • Unique Clusters: The full open strum (D-G-C-F-A#-E) is a dense, dissonant cluster that defies simple chord names, offering a rich sonic backdrop for avant-garde or atmospheric music. It contains elements of D minor with added extensions and tensions.
  • Ease of Barre Chords: The consistent P4 intervals on the lower strings mean that many complex chord shapes or scale patterns become much easier to transpose simply by moving a barre up or down the neck, opening up a world of fluid movement across the fretboard. The unique intervals on the higher strings will require adaptation but also unlock entirely new harmonic possibilities.

Open String Notes

6th String (Low E): D2
5th String (A): G2
4th String (D): C3
3rd String (G): F3
2nd String (B): A#4
1st String (High E): E4

How to Tune

To achieve the "D Minor Quartal Fourths" tuning, adjust your guitar strings from standard E A D G B E as follows:

  • 6th String (Low E): Tune down 2 semitones to D2.
  • 5th String (A): Tune down 2 semitones to G2.
  • 4th String (D): Tune down 2 semitones to C3.
  • 3rd String (G): Tune down 2 semitones to F3.
  • 2nd String (B): Tune down 1 semitone to A#4.
  • 1st String (High E): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones). Remains E4.

Important Note on String Gauge: When tuning strings more than 4 semitones up or down, it is generally recommended to consider using a different string gauge to ensure optimal tension and prevent potential string breakage or intonation issues. For this particular tuning, all string movements are within a safe range for standard gauges.
