DGDGBE G6. Drop DG - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
Often used in Classical Music. Alternatively, fantastic substitute for Open G. Any chords and scales using the top four strings of Standard remain unchanged in this tuning, likewise for the bottom five strings of Open G.
Verbal and Technical Analysis
The 'G6. Drop DG' tuning presents a rich and versatile open tuning, particularly celebrated in classical guitar for its resonant qualities and the ease with which certain chord voicings can be achieved. It's aptly named as the open strings collectively form a G6 chord (D-G-D-G-B-E), providing a full, harmonically rich foundation when strummed. The low D and G create a powerful bass presence, characteristic of drop tunings, enhancing the depth and sustain of chords.
Technically, the open notes are D2-G2-D3-G3-B3-E4. This configuration is ingeniously designed to offer familiarity while expanding harmonic possibilities. A significant advantage is that the top four strings (D3-G3-B3-E4) are identical in pitch to the 4th, 3rd, 2nd, and 1st strings of standard tuning. This means that a vast array of familiar chord shapes, scales, and melodic patterns for the upper register can be directly applied without modification. Furthermore, the bottom five strings (D2-G2-D3-G3-B3) mirror the structure of the bottom five strings of Open G tuning (D-G-D-G-B), making it a seamless transition for players familiar with Open G.
The combination of these elements provides immense versatility. The low D string (D2) extends the bass range, ideal for classical pieces or compositions requiring deep, resonant root notes. When strummed open, the G6 chord rings out beautifully. Chords such as G major, D major, and E minor are readily accessible, often requiring minimal finger movement. The open D-G-D-G pattern on the lower strings offers a strong drone capability for G-based harmonies, while the G-B-E on the upper strings provides a brighter, more standard-like melodic framework. This tuning is excellent for fingerstyle, folk, and classical arrangements, allowing for both powerful bass lines and intricate melodies.
How to Tune Your Guitar
- 6th String (Low E): Tune down 2 semitones from E to D2.
- 5th String (A): Tune down 2 semitones from A to G2.
- 4th String (D): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones), remains D3.
- 3rd String (G): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones), remains G3.
- 2nd String (B): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones), remains B3.
- 1st String (High E): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones), remains E4.
Note on String Gauge: Tuning down 2 semitones for the low E and A strings is well within safe limits for standard guitar string gauges. No special considerations for string tension or gauge are typically required for this tuning.
