DGDGCD Modal G - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
Tuning Analysis: Modal G
The Modal G tuning (DGDGCD) offers a unique and resonant soundscape, diverging significantly from standard EADGBe. This tuning is particularly well-suited for explorations in modal music, ambient soundscapes, and alternative rock, providing a rich, open texture that encourages melodic improvisation and droning techniques.
Technically, the open strings D-G-D-G-C-D present a complex, yet harmonically interesting cluster. The lowest four strings (D-G-D-G) form a powerful Gsus2 or Dsus4 drone, creating a full and resonant foundation often found in open G tunings. The addition of the C on the second string and D on the first string introduces a distinct modal flavor, especially when considering the relationship to the root D. When strummed open, the tuning suggests a Dsus4(addC) or a Gsus4 chord with a strong D pedal tone. It can be interpreted as a D7sus4 (D-G-C) or even a G-based chord (G-D-G) with a dominant D and a modal C. This configuration opens up possibilities for playing in D Mixolydian or G Dorian modes very naturally. Barring across all strings at any fret will yield robust, intervallic chords with a repeating pattern of fourths, lending itself to powerful, droning textures perfect for rock, folk, or experimental music. The intervals between the 6th string and 2nd string (D to C) create a Major 7th, providing a distinct bluesy or modal tension. Chords like D5, G5, or C5 become easily accessible across multiple string sets, and simple fingerings can produce complex voicings.
How to Tune to Modal G
To achieve the Modal G tuning from standard EADGBe, follow these steps:
- String 6 (Low E): Tune down 2 semitones to D2.
- String 5 (A): Tune down 2 semitones to G2.
- String 4 (D): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones) to D3.
- String 3 (G): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones) to G3.
- String 2 (B): Tune up 1 semitone to C4. (Note: Tuning up 1 semitone is generally safe, but always tune gradually.)
- String 1 (High E): Tune down 2 semitones to D4.
Please note: All string adjustments are within a safe range (less than 4 semitones up or down) for standard string gauges. However, always exercise caution when tuning, especially when increasing string tension, and listen for any signs of strain on your instrument.
String 6 (Low E): Tuned down to D2
String 5 (A): Tuned down to G2
String 4 (D): Remains D3
String 3 (G): Remains G3
String 2 (B): Tuned up to C4
String 1 (High E): Tuned down to D4
