3 high notes as D6

JomeLaxby

The "JomeLaxby" tuning, also known as G6/9, is a wonderfully rich and evocative open tuning for the guitar. It's cleverly designed with a distinct split personality, as highlighted in its description: the three bass strings form a strong E minor chord, while the three treble strings lean towards a D6 voicing. This creates a fascinating harmonic interplay, offering both a solid, melancholic foundation and sparkling, extended upper sonorities.

Verbally, this tuning suggests a sound world that is both deep and luminous. It could be incredibly expressive for fingerstyle arrangements, ambient soundscapes, or even a unique approach to blues and folk music where a rich drone and open, ringing chords are desired. The inherent Em-D6 juxtaposition lends itself to complex harmonic movement with minimal effort, providing a lush canvas for improvisation and songwriting. Imagine strumming all open strings and hearing a full, resonant chord that immediately sparks creativity – that's the essence of the JomeLaxby.

Technically, the open string notes are E2 G2 B2 D3 A3 B3. Analyzing this, the combined open strings yield a rich cluster of notes: E, G, B, D, A. This essentially forms an E minor 9th chord (E-G-B-D-A), minus the typical F# but including the A as a 4th/11th, creating a sophisticated and full sound without any fretting. The lower E-G-B provides a clear E minor triad, serving as an excellent base for darker, more introspective pieces. The upper D-A-B, while not a complete D6, strongly implies it, offering bright, extended harmonies that can float above the E minor foundation. This separation allows for distinct harmonic layers, where the bass can drive the tonality while the treble adds color and complexity.

Due to its open structure, many chords become easily accessible. The open E minor 9th (E G B D A B) is a beautiful starting point. By simply barring across various frets, you can transpose this complex chord, creating a range of extended minor 9th and other jazzy voicings. For instance, a barre at the 2nd fret would yield an F# minor 9th. The relative ease of achieving rich, dense harmonies makes this tuning powerful for composers and performers looking to add depth to their sound. Exploring partial chords, especially by omitting the lowest E string, can reveal interesting D-major or G-major derived voicings. The E string also serves as a fantastic drone, enhancing the overall resonance of the tuning.

Open String Notes:

  • 6th String (Low E): E2
  • 5th String (A): G2
  • 4th String (D): B2
  • 3rd String (G): D3
  • 2nd String (B): A3
  • 1st String (High E): B3

How to Tune:

To achieve the JomeLaxby tuning from standard EADGBe, follow these steps. Please note that significant changes in string tension may require a different gauge string for optimal performance and to avoid potential string breakage or intonation issues.

  1. 6th String (Low E): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones). Stays at E2.
  2. 5th String (A): Tune down 2 semitones from A2 to G2.
  3. 4th String (D): Tune down 3 semitones from D3 to B2.
  4. 3rd String (G): Tune down 5 semitones from G3 to D3. Caution: This is a significant drop (more than 4 semitones). Consider using a heavier gauge string for better tension and intonation.
  5. 2nd String (B): Tune down 2 semitones from B3 to A3.
  6. 1st String (High E): Tune down 5 semitones from E4 to B3. Caution: This is a significant drop (more than 4 semitones). Consider using a heavier gauge string for better tension and intonation.
