FCECFG# | FCECFA♭ F Minor Major 7 - Guitar tuning, chords & scales

Description - F Minor Major 7

This tuning prevents one from using barred chords in heavy music when tuned down neraly an octave all the time and scales are fun to play (minor pentatonic for example), but can be a bit hard sometimes. I made up this tuning.

Tuning Analysis: F minor major 7

The 'F minor major 7' tuning is a highly distinctive and harmonically rich configuration for the guitar. Unlike many common tunings, this setup immediately presents a full F minor-major 7 chord (F-Ab-C-E) in the open position, making it incredibly resonant and inspiring for certain musical styles. While the original description alludes to tuning down for heavy music, the actual string movements provided indicate significant upward adjustments from standard E Standard, which opens up a different sonic landscape entirely, leaning towards sophisticated harmonies rather than detuned aggression.

Verbal Analysis: This tuning boasts a sophisticated and somewhat melancholic yet bright character, characteristic of minor-major 7 chords. It evokes a feeling often heard in jazz, fusion, or cinematic soundscapes, offering a touch of both tension and beauty. The open strings, when strummed, create a beautiful, full-bodied chord that can serve as a rich harmonic backdrop. Arpeggiated, it reveals intricate melodic possibilities. The presence of repeated F and C notes across different octaves provides a powerful root and fifth foundation, lending immense depth and fullness to the sound. The wide and somewhat unusual intervals between strings, particularly the prominent major seventh (E) and minor third (Ab/G#), invite players to explore non-traditional chord voicings and lead lines, encouraging a departure from conventional scale patterns and embracing the unique harmonic language inherent in the tuning.

Technical Analysis: The open strings are precisely tuned to F2, C3, E3, C4, F4, and G5#. When viewed enharmonically (G# as Ab), these notes perfectly spell out an F minor-major 7 chord: F (root), C (perfect fifth), E (major seventh), C (perfect fifth), F (octave root), and Ab (minor third). This highly consonant arrangement means that simply barring across frets will produce other minor-major 7 chords up the neck, offering easy transposition. The repeated F and C notes provide a strong harmonic anchor, while the distinct interval between the 2nd and 1st strings (F4 to G#5) creates interesting melodic leaps. This tuning is well-suited for exploring modes like F Melodic Minor or F Harmonic Minor, as many of their characteristic notes are built right into the open strings, providing a natural canvas for advanced improvisation.

How to Tune Your Guitar to F minor major 7

To achieve the F minor major 7 tuning, you will need to adjust your guitar's strings as follows from standard E Standard tuning (E-A-D-G-B-E). Please pay close attention to the recommended string gauge advice for significant pitch changes, as several strings require substantial upward adjustments in tension:

  • 6th String (Low E): Tune up 1 semitone from E2 to F2. (Minor adjustment, generally safe.)
  • 5th String (A): Tune up 3 semitones from A2 to C3. (Moderate adjustment, use caution.)
  • 4th String (D): Tune up 2 semitones from D3 to E3. (Minor adjustment, generally safe.)
  • 3rd String (G): Tune up 5 semitones from G3 to C4. Warning: This is a significant upward change (exceeds 4 semitones). A lighter gauge string for this position is strongly advised to prevent string breakage or excessive tension.
  • 2nd String (B): Tune up 6 semitones from B3 to F4. Warning: This is a significant upward change (a tritone, and exceeds 4 semitones). A lighter gauge string for this position is strongly advised to prevent string breakage or excessive tension.
  • 1st String (High E): Tune up 4 semitones from E4 to G5#. Warning: This is a significant upward change. A lighter gauge string for this position is strongly advised to prevent string breakage or excessive tension.

Always tune slowly and carefully, especially when increasing string tension significantly. If you are unsure about the required string gauges or the tuning process, consulting a professional guitar technician is highly recommended to avoid potential damage to your instrument or strings.
