FCGCEG Guitar Tuner

FCGCEG FCGCEG - Guitar tuning, chords & scales

Description - FCGCEG

This unique guitar tuning, which we've named "Open C Major 9 (F Bass)", offers a rich and complex sonic palette. It's built upon a foundation reminiscent of Open C tuning, but with significant alterations that create its distinctive character. The open strings resonate with a full, lush chord, making it ideal for expressive strumming, intricate fingerstyle arrangements, and creating powerful drone effects.

Technical Analysis:

  • The open strings are tuned to F2 C3 G3 C4 E4 G4. These notes collectively form a C Major 9 chord with an F in the bass. Specifically, it presents as Cmaj9/F, creating a sophisticated and full harmonic texture.
  • The interval structure from the lowest F string is F (Root), C (Perfect 5th), G (Major 2nd/9th), C (Octave from 5th string, Perfect 4th from G), E (Major 7th), G (Major 2nd/9th from F, Perfect 5th from C).
  • The upper five strings (C G C E G) strongly emphasize a C Major tonality, with multiple octaves of C and G, and the B string raised to E, reinforcing the major third. This gives a bright and open sound to the higher register.

Chords and Playability:

  • Open Chord: The tuning's open strings naturally form a C Major 9 chord with an F in the bass (F-C-G-C-E-G). This provides an immediate, resonant sound without fretting.
  • Barre Chords: By barring all strings at any fret, you will effortlessly create parallel Cmaj9/F type chords up the neck, shifting the root note accordingly. For example, a barre at the first fret would yield a C#maj9/F# chord.
  • Dominant and Suspended Sounds: The inherent intervals lend themselves well to exploring dominant 7th and suspended chords with relatively simple fingerings. The doubled Gs and Cs provide a rich harmonic base for these voicings.
  • Drone Potential: The open G and C strings can serve as excellent drone notes, particularly effective in blues, folk, or experimental music.
  • Familiarity for Open C Players: Players accustomed to Open C tuning might find the upper string voicings somewhat familiar, allowing for a quicker adaptation, while the dropped F adds a new dimension.

How to Tune:

To achieve this unique tuning from standard E Standard (E A D G B E), carefully adjust each string as follows:

  • String 6 (Low E to F2): Tune up 1 semitones.
  • String 5 (A to C3): Tune up 3 semitones.
  • String 4 (D to G3): Tune up 5 semitones. (Caution: This is a significant increase in tension; consider a heavier gauge string.)
  • String 3 (G to C4): Tune up 5 semitones. (Caution: This is a significant increase in tension; consider a heavier gauge string.)
  • String 2 (B to E4): Tune up 5 semitones. (Caution: This is a significant increase in tension; consider a heavier gauge string.)
  • String 1 (High E to G4): Tune up 3 semitones.

Please exercise caution when tuning strings up more than 4 semitones, as this significantly increases string tension and could potentially damage your guitar or string. For sustained use, a different gauge string is strongly advised for strings 4, 3, and 2.

String 6: F2 - The lowest string, tuned to F, provides a deep and resonant bass foundation, anchoring the entire tuning.

String 5: C3 - This C string offers a strong fundamental for the C major tonality and forms a perfect fifth with the lowest F.

String 4: G3 - Tuned to G, it reinforces the overall C Major 9 sound and serves as a natural drone or strong melodic note.

String 3: C4 - Another C string, an octave higher than the 5th string, adding brightness and harmonic richness to the core C major voicing.

String 2: E4 - This E string forms the major third of the C major chord, giving the tuning its characteristic bright and open major feel.

String 1: G4 - The highest G string completes the open chord, adding sparkle and a high melodic range, creating a full and vibrant top end.
