FFCFCF Double Drop F (Requires A 30" Baritone) - Guitar tuning, chords & scales

Description - Double Drop F (Requires A 30" Baritone)

Double Drop F (or Double Drop F0, FFCFCF). This tuning requires a 30" baritone and super thick strings.

The "Double Drop F" tuning, also known as FFCFCF, plunges your guitar into an exceptionally deep and resonant territory. This tuning is not for the faint of heart or standard instruments; it explicitly requires a 30-inch scale baritone guitar and a set of super thick gauge strings to achieve proper tension and intonation.

Verbal Analysis:

Imagine a wall of sound so immense it physically vibrates you – that's the sonic signature of Double Drop F. It’s built for colossal, crushing riffs and atmospheric textures in genres like doom metal, sludge, extreme metal, and experimental music where a standard guitar simply can't reach. The sheer depth of the F0 note on the lowest string, combined with the resonant F and C intervals, creates an almost industrial, earthquake-inducing rumble. It's a tuning designed for pure power, gravitas, and a foundational heaviness that demands attention.

Technical Analysis:

Technically, the open strings are tuned to F0-F1-C2-F2-C3-F3. This arrangement forms a massive F Power Chord (F-C) spread across four octaves. Specifically, it can be interpreted as an Fsus2 chord without the major third, making it versatile for both major and minor tonalities in a power chord context. The intervals from the lowest F (F0) are:

  • 6th String (F0): Root
  • 5th String (F1): Root (one octave up)
  • 4th String (C2): Perfect 5th (two octaves up from F0)
  • 3rd String (F2): Root (two octaves up from F0)
  • 2nd String (C3): Perfect 5th (three octaves up from F0)
  • 1st String (F3): Root (three octaves up from F0)

This open chord structure provides incredible resonance. The repeated F and C notes across multiple octaves create a thick, dense harmonic foundation. Playing power chords (root-fifth) becomes effortless across any set of adjacent strings, making it a dream for aggressive, down-tuned riffing.

Chords and Playability:

The open tuning itself rings out as a huge, resonant F Power Chord. Barring across all six strings at any fret will yield a massive power chord with the same F-C-F intervalic structure, simply transposed. For example, barring at the 1st fret gives you an F# power chord (F#0-F#1-C#2-F#2-C#3-F#3), and so on. This makes transposing power chords extremely intuitive. While not ideal for intricate jazz or pop voicings, the design lends itself perfectly to:

  • Huge Power Chords: Easily accessible by barring across three, four, or all six strings for a monolithic sound.
  • Drone Effects: The open F and C notes provide excellent opportunities for sustained drones, particularly when combined with effects like reverb and delay, creating vast sonic landscapes.
  • Single-Note Riffs: The immense low end makes single-note melodic lines and heavy chugging incredibly weighty and impactful, capable of cutting through any mix.

Given the extreme down-tuning required for all strings (ranging from -9 to -13 semitones from standard EADGBe), standard guitar strings will be far too loose to maintain tension, intonation, or playability. The recommendation for a 30" baritone and super thick strings is not just a suggestion but a necessity for this tuning. Attempting this tuning on a standard scale length or with light strings will result in a flubby, unplayable instrument and potentially damage the guitar.

Tuning Notes:

6th String (Lowest): F0
5th String: F1
4th String: C2
3rd String: F2
2nd String: C3
1st String (Highest): F3

How to Tune:

To achieve the Double Drop F tuning, you will be significantly lowering the pitch of each string from its standard tuning. Due to the extreme nature of these drops, a 30-inch baritone guitar with super thick strings is essential to maintain proper tension and intonation.

  • 6th String (Lowest E): Tune down 13 semitones to F0.
  • 5th String (A): Tune down 11 semitones to F1.
  • 4th String (D): Tune down 9 semitones to C2.
  • 3rd String (G): Tune down 9 semitones to F2.
  • 2nd String (B): Tune down 11 semitones to C3.
  • 1st String (Highest E): Tune down 11 semitones to F3.

Important Note on String Gauge: As all strings are tuned down by 9 semitones or more (significantly exceeding the recommended -4 semitone limit for standard gauges), using a much heavier gauge string set specifically designed for baritone or extremely low tunings is absolutely critical. Failure to do so will result in poor playability, buzzing, intonation issues, and potential damage to your instrument.
