Tuning Overview: Friction F Drone
The "Friction F Drone" tuning, affectionately described as "blergcore amazing stuff" in its original notes, is an avant-garde and highly experimental setup for the guitar. It boldly steps away from traditional major or minor tonalities, instead creating a dense, often dissonant soundscape centered around an F drone. This tuning is ideal for musicians exploring ambient soundscapes, heavy genres, noise music, or anything requiring a unique, tension-filled sonic palette.
Technical Analysis
The open string notes are F2, G#3, D3, F#4, B3, F4 (from 6th to 1st string).
The most striking feature is the powerful, low F2 on the 6th string, which acts as a consistent drone throughout. This is complemented by an F4 on the 1st string, creating a full two-octave spread for the root note. However, the immediate presence of F#4 on the 3rd string just a semitone above the top F4 (or a minor 9th above F2) introduces significant chromatic tension and 'friction', living up to its name.
While not an open major or minor chord, this tuning offers surprising harmonic depth. When played together, the middle four strings (G#3, D3, F#4, B3) surprisingly form a G# minor 7th chord (reordered as G# B D F#). This allows for rich, jazzy or melancholic voicings to emerge from the upper-middle register, contrasting with the heavier F drone and chromatic clashes of the outer strings.
The overall voicing is complex and encourages exploration outside of conventional chord shapes. Power chords on the lowest strings are easily achievable, providing a robust foundation. The density of notes and the inherent dissonance lend themselves well to droning textures, percussive riffing, or creating abstract soundscapes where traditional harmony is secondary to texture and atmosphere.
Open String Notes:
- 6th String (Low E string equivalent): F2
- 5th String (A string equivalent): G#3
- 4th String (D string equivalent): D3
- 3rd String (G string equivalent): F#4
- 2nd String (B string equivalent): B3
- 1st String (High E string equivalent): F4
How to Tune:
To achieve the "Friction F Drone" tuning, carefully adjust each string according to the instructions below. Please note that significant changes (more than 4 semitones up or down) may require a different string gauge to ensure optimal tension and prevent string breakage.
- 6th String: Tune up 1 semitone from E to F2.
- 5th String: Tune down 1 semitone from A to G#3.
- 4th String: Keep as is; no change (0 semitones) to D3.
- 3rd String: Tune down 1 semitone from G to F#4.
- 2nd String: Keep as is; no change (0 semitones) to B3.
- 1st String: Tune up 1 semitone from E to F4.
Note: All string movements for this tuning are relatively minor (1 semitone up/down or no change), making it generally accessible for standard guitars without requiring special string gauges.
