GDG 3-String Open G - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
This "3-String Open G" tuning transforms your guitar into a powerful rhythm machine, focusing solely on a select trio of strings. Specifically designed to utilize the A, D, and G strings of a standard guitar, it creates a robust Open G chord when strummed openly. The characteristic low G-D-G voicing provides a rich, resonant foundation, making it particularly well-suited for rhythm playing, blues, folk, and slide guitar styles where a droning bass and easily accessible major chords are desired.
Technical Analysis
The tuning results in the notes G2, D3, and G3 across the three active strings (which correspond to the standard 5th, 4th, and 3rd strings respectively, if using a 6-string guitar). This configuration immediately forms a G major triad (root, fifth, root) in a low register. The intervals between the open strings are a perfect fourth (G2 to D3) and a perfect fifth (D3 to G3), creating a harmonically stable and full sound. This inherent major chord allows for incredibly easy major chord changes simply by barring across all three strings at different frets. For instance, barring at the 5th fret will yield a C major chord, and at the 7th fret, a D major chord. This simplicity makes it a favorite for driving rhythmic patterns and modal playing.
How to Tune
- Lowest String (Original A String): Tune down 2 semitones from its standard A2 note to G2. This is a whole step drop, so proceed carefully.
- Middle String (Original D String): Keep this string as is; it remains at its standard D3 note (0 semitones change).
- Highest String (Original G String): Keep this string as is; it remains at its standard G3 note (0 semitones change).
When adjusting string tension, particularly for the lowest string's whole-step drop, it's always wise to monitor the string's stability. While tuning down 2 semitones is generally within a safe range for standard string gauges, for any tuning movements exceeding 4 semitones (either up or down), considering a different string gauge is often recommended to ensure optimal string tension, intonation, and longevity.
