Description - Hybrid Bass + Baritone Tuning
Hybrid six tring bass + baritone tuning. Gauges that I used for this tuning on 34"
165 - 105 - 65 - 50 - 32 - 26p
For the 26 plain string, I used a normal guitar string. Might not be long enough on other basses though. Alternative is to buy a 26 wound bass string or a 26 plain bass string if the guitar string is not long enough.
Introducing the Hybrid Bass + Baritone Tuning, a truly innovative and expansive six-string setup designed for the Bass Electric. This tuning stretches the boundaries of conventional instrument roles, offering a unique sonic landscape that marries the deep resonance of a bass with the articulate range of a baritone guitar.
Verbal Analysis
This tuning is a playground for exploration, ideal for musicians seeking to craft distinctive soundscapes, from thunderous low-end textures to shimmering, higher-register melodies. The original description notes the practical aspect of using a plain guitar string (26p) for the highest string, underscoring the 'hybrid' philosophy. This choice allows the tuning to reach into territory typically reserved for guitars, opening up possibilities for unique chord voicings and melodic leads not commonly heard on a bass. Such a wide-ranging setup naturally lends itself to genres like progressive rock, metal, ambient, or experimental music where a broad sonic palette is highly valued. It invites players to rethink their approach to chord structures and single-note lines, taking full advantage of the instrument's expanded range.
Technical Analysis
This six-string Bass Electric is tuned to G#2, D2, C3, E3, C4, F4 (from thickest to thinnest string). This configuration provides an extraordinary total range, allowing for deep, resonant bass notes and articulate, higher-pitched sounds. Let's look at the open string relationships:
- The lowest strings (G#2, D2) create a prominent tritone interval, offering a dark and tension-filled foundation.
- The core of the tuning on strings 4, 3, and 2 (C3, E3, C4) forms a strong C Major arpeggio, suggesting that C Major or related modes could be easily voiced as open or easily accessible shapes.
- The highest string, F4, adds a perfect fourth above the C4, creating a rich Cmaj7sus4-like harmony (C-E-F-C) on the upper four strings if the lower strings are muted or used as a drone.
- Due to the non-standard and wide intervallic jumps between strings (e.g., a descending tritone from 6th to 5th, an ascending minor 7th from 5th to 4th), this tuning is not optimized for conventional open chord strumming. Instead, it encourages exploring complex arpeggios, power chords using select strings, and specific melodic runs that leverage its unique scale. Power chords can be readily formed using the C3 and E3 strings, or combinations with the C4 and F4. The open string notes (G#, D, C, E, F) offer a distinctive tonal cluster that can be utilized for unique harmonic textures. The specified string gauges (165 - 105 - 65 - 50 - 32 - 26p) are critical for maintaining appropriate tension across this wide range and dramatic tunings.
Tuning Notes:
Here are the notes for each string, from thickest (6th) to thinnest (1st):
- String 6: G#2
- String 5: D2
- String 4: C3
- String 3: E3
- String 2: C4
- String 1: F4
How to Tune:
Follow these instructions to achieve the Hybrid Bass + Baritone Tuning:
- String 6: Tune down 8 semitones to G#2. Caution: Tuning down 8 semitones is a very significant drop. It is highly recommended to use a heavier gauge string than standard to maintain proper tension, intonation, and tone, as suggested by the original description's 165 gauge. If tuning from a typical E1, this is an extremely large adjustment.
- String 5: Tune down 7 semitones to D2. Caution: Tuning down 7 semitones is a very significant drop. It is highly recommended to use a heavier gauge string than standard to maintain proper tension, intonation, and tone, as suggested by the original description's 105 gauge. If tuning from a typical A1, this is an extremely large adjustment.
- String 4: Tune down 2 semitones to C3.
- String 3: Tune down 3 semitones to E3.
- String 2: Tune up 1 semitone to C4.
- String 1: Tune up 1 semitone to F4.
