AAEAC#E | AAEAD♭E Open A Overtone - Guitar tuning, chords & scales

Description - Open A Overtone

Overtone tunings that are open tunings have been used in songs by folk musician Joni Mitchell and by rock guitarist Mick Ralphs of Bad Company; these open overtones-tunings select their open notes from the first six partials of their overtone sequence on A or E

Tuning Description: Open A Overtone

The Open A Overtone tuning is a captivating setup for the guitar, specifically designed to resonate with the natural harmonics of the instrument. As the name suggests, this is an "open" tuning, meaning that strumming all open strings will produce a harmonious chord – in this case, a rich A Major.

Historically, overtone tunings have been embraced by innovative musicians like folk legend Joni Mitchell and rock guitarist Mick Ralphs of Bad Company. This particular tuning draws its open notes directly from the first six partials of an A or E overtone sequence, creating a natural, resonant soundscape that encourages sympathetic vibrations and drones.

Technical Analysis & Chordal Opportunities:

The open string notes are configured as: A1 - A2 - E3 - A3 - C#5 - E4 (from thickest to thinnest string).This arrangement creates a full A Major chord (A - C# - E) across the open strings, featuring multiple octaves of A and E, and a prominent C# major third.

  • Open A Major Chord: The most immediate benefit is the ability to strum all open strings to achieve a powerful and resonant A Major chord. This makes playing in the key of A or its relative minor (F#m) incredibly intuitive.
  • Barre Chords: Moving a single barre shape up the neck will yield major chords (e.g., barre at the 2nd fret for B Major, 3rd fret for C Major). This provides a quick way to transpose songs across different keys.
  • Drone Potential: With the multiple A and E notes throughout the tuning, there's a strong foundation for creating sustained drone effects, particularly on the lower strings. This is ideal for ambient textures, folk music, or experimental styles.
  • Creative Voicings: The unique interval structure encourages exploration of new melodic and harmonic ideas. Chord inversions and extended chords become accessible with minimal finger movement, especially given the high C# and E on the thinner strings. For instance, an A minor chord could be achieved by simply fretting the 2nd string down to C (1st fret).

This tuning is perfect for fingerstyle players seeking rich harmonies, slide guitarists looking for expressive glissandos over a major chord, or anyone interested in exploring the resonant qualities and natural overtones of the guitar.

Open String Notes:

  • String 6 (low E string equivalent): A1
  • String 5 (A string equivalent): A2
  • String 4 (D string equivalent): E3
  • String 3 (G string equivalent): A3
  • String 2 (B string equivalent): C#5
  • String 1 (high E string equivalent): E4

How to Tune (from Standard EADGBe):

Please exercise caution when adjusting string tension. For significant changes (down more than 4 semitones or up more than 4 semitones), a different string gauge may be advised to prevent damage to your instrument or strings.

  • String 6 (Low E): To reach A1, tune down 7 semitones.
Caution: This is a substantial drop in tension (-7 semitones). Consider a heavier gauge string for optimal playability and to maintain proper neck relief if using this tuning regularly.
  • String 5 (A): To reach A2, keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
  • String 4 (D): To reach E3, tune up 2 semitones.
Care advised: Tuning up 2 semitones requires careful adjustment.
  • String 3 (G): To reach A3, tune up 2 semitones.
Care advised: Tuning up 2 semitones requires careful adjustment.
  • String 2 (B): To reach C#5, tune up 2 semitones.
Care advised: Tuning up 2 semitones requires careful adjustment.
  • String 1 (High E): To reach E4, keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
