ADAC#EA | ADADâ™EA A Resonance Tuning - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
The "A Resonance Tuning" transforms your guitar into a deeply resonant soundscape, offering a unique blend of drone and harmonic richness. This tuning centers around a powerful A Major tonality, enhanced by a prominent D, creating a full and open sound that is both familiar and strikingly fresh.
Technical Analysis:
The open strings are tuned to A2 D2 A3 C4# E3 A4. This configuration creates an open A Major triad (A-C#-E) with significant reinforcement and a crucial addition: the D note on the 5th string.
- The 6th, 4th, and 1st strings are all tuned to A (A2, A3, A4 respectively), providing a strong, layered A drone that underpins the entire tuning.
- The C4# on the 3rd string establishes the major third, firmly rooting the tuning in an A Major harmonic framework.
- The E3 on the 2nd string completes the A Major triad, adding a perfect fifth.
- A defining characteristic is the D2 on the 5th string. This perfect fourth interval from the low A introduces a unique harmonic color, creating an A Major(add4) sound when all strings are strummed open. This adds a beautiful, slightly suspended, or modal quality to the open chord.
This tuning is exceptionally well-suited for slide guitar, where the open drone can shine, and for fingerstyle playing, allowing for rich arpeggios and interwoven melodies. The strong bass presence from the A2 and D2 strings provides a solid foundation for any musical exploration.
Open & Accessible Chords:
- Open Chord: Strumming all six open strings produces a rich A Major(add4) chord (A D A C# E A). This chord has a full, resonant quality that can serve as a home base for compositions.
- A Major: By simply muting or avoiding the 5th (D2) string, a strong A Major triad (A A C# E A) is readily available.
- D Major: With the D2 on the 5th string, D major chords become highly accessible. For example, a barré at the 5th fret across strings 4-1 (D4, F#4, A3, D5) combined with the open D2 string yields a powerful D Major chord.
- Power Chords: The repeated A notes (6th, 4th, 1st strings) make power chords incredibly easy to form. Barring these strings at any fret will give you strong octaves, allowing for powerful two-note power chords by adding the note a fifth away.
- D Major 7 Voicings: The combination of D2 (5th string), A3 (4th string), C4# (3rd string), and E3 (2nd string) provides the essential components of a Dmaj7 (D A C# E), making various Dmaj7 voicings easily reachable across these strings.
How to Tune:
Please note: This tuning involves significant changes from standard EADGBe tuning. Many strings are tuned outside the recommended range of +/- 4 semitones. For optimal tone, string tension, and to avoid potential damage, it is highly recommended to use a different gauge string set specifically suited for these tension changes. Consider heavier gauges for strings being tuned down significantly and lighter gauges for those being tuned up dramatically.
- 6th String (Low E): Tune to A2. Tune up 5 semitones. Warning: Tuning up 5 semitones is a significant change; a different string gauge is advised.
- 5th String (A): Tune to D2. Tune down 7 semitones. Warning: Tuning down 7 semitones is a significant change; a different string gauge is advised.
- 4th String (D): Tune to A3. Tune up 7 semitones. Warning: Tuning up 7 semitones is a significant change; a different string gauge is advised.
- 3rd String (G): Tune to C4#. Tune down 6 semitones. Warning: Tuning down 6 semitones is a significant change; a different string gauge is advised.
- 2nd String (B): Tune to E3. Tune down 7 semitones. Warning: Tuning down 7 semitones is a significant change; a different string gauge is advised.
- 1st String (High E): Tune to A4. Tune up 5 semitones. Warning: Tuning up 5 semitones is a significant change; a different string gauge is advised.
The "A Resonance Tuning" sets your guitar to the following notes:
- 6th String: A2 (Lowest String)
- 5th String: D2
- 4th String: A3
- 3rd String: C4#
- 2nd String: E3
- 1st String: A4 (Highest String)
