BEADGC Bass Electric Tuner
BEADGC BEADGC - Standard 6-string Bass Tuning - Bass Electric tuning, chords & scales
Verbal and Technical Analysis: Extended Range Bass Standard
The tuning, officially known as "BEADGC - Standard 6-string bass tuning," represents the definitive standard for electric six-string bass guitars. This setup expands upon the traditional four-string bass tuning (E-A-D-G) by adding a lower B string (B0) and a higher C string (C3). This extension provides an incredibly broad tonal palette, making it suitable for a vast array of musical genres, from deep, resonant metal and progressive rock to fluid jazz lines and complex melodic passages.
Technically, this tuning is characterized by a consistent interval of a perfect fourth between all strings: B0-E1, E1-A1, A1-D2, D2-G2, G2-C3. This uniformity is a significant advantage, allowing bassists to easily transfer chord shapes, scales, and arpeggios across the neck without complex mental adjustments. The open string notes themselves (B-E-A-D-G-C) do not form a common open chord, but the consistent perfect fourth intervals make the construction of fundamental bass voicings highly intuitive. Power chords (root-fifth-octave) are particularly straightforward to execute across the strings. The added high C string facilitates more melodic phrasing, complex harmonic extensions, and even guitar-like chord voicings in the upper register, such as shell voicings or triads, expanding the instrument's role beyond traditional bass lines.
How to Tune to Extended Range Bass Standard
Achieving this tuning requires significant adjustments, mostly involving tuning strings down considerably from a standard reference. Due to the large semitone movements specified, it is strongly advised to consider using a heavier gauge string set specifically designed for a 6-string bass tuned to BEADGC to ensure proper tension, intonation, and to prevent potential damage to the instrument.
- String 6 (Lowest): Tune down 12 semitones to reach B0. This is a full octave drop.
- String 5: Tune down 12 semitones to reach E1. This is also a full octave drop.
- String 4: Tune down 12 semitones to reach A1. This string requires a full octave reduction.
- String 3: Tune down 12 semitones to reach D2. This is another complete octave down.
- String 2: Tune down 12 semitones to reach G2. An octave reduction is needed here.
- String 1 (Highest): Tune down 11 semitones to reach C3. This string needs to be lowered by eleven semitones.
Given that all strings require movements exceeding 4 semitones (in most cases, a full octave), a dedicated string set for this tuning is highly recommended to maintain playability and avoid potential issues with string breakage or inadequate tension.
The Extended Range Bass Standard tuning sets the following open notes:
- String 6 (Lowest): B0 (B zero)
- String 5: E1 (E one)
- String 4: A1 (A one)
- String 3: D2 (D two)
- String 2: G2 (G two)
- String 1 (Highest): C3 (C three)
