BF#C#F#C#C# | BG♭D♭G♭D♭D♭ Open Bsus2 - Guitar tuning, chords & scales

Description - Open Bsus2

i made it up. i write my own songs with it. i particularly enjoy it because a lot of songs can write themselves on it, especially when experimenting with drone strings.

The Open Bsus2 tuning is a truly inventive and inspiring setup, crafted by its creator for personal songwriting. As they describe it, "a lot of songs can write themselves on it, especially when experimenting with drone strings," and this sentiment perfectly captures the essence of its unique sonic landscape. It’s an open, suspended harmony that invites exploration and encourages spontaneous musical creation.

Verbal Analysis:

Strumming the open strings immediately conjures a rich, shimmering Bsus2 chord, creating a sense of openness and introspection rather than a strong major or minor tonality. This characteristic makes it an excellent canvas for melodies to unfold, often leading to surprising and evocative musical ideas. The prominent presence of multiple C# and F# notes across different octaves provides a lush, resonant foundation, ideal for intricate fingerstyle, ambient textures, or the "drone strings" approach mentioned by its inventor. The identical highest two strings offer a fantastic opportunity for unison bends or sustained ringing notes, adding an ethereal quality to your playing.

Technical Analysis:

The tuning consists of the notes B2-F#3-C#4-F#4-C#5-C#5 from low to high. This arrangement technically spells out a Bsus2 chord (B - C# - F#) with significant doubling of the perfect fifth (F#) and the major second/ninth (C#). The intervals from the root (B) are: root (B), perfect fifth (F#), major second/ninth (C#), perfect fifth (F#), major second/ninth (C#), and major second/ninth (C#). This layered structure provides exceptional harmonic depth.

The open chord itself is a Bsus2, making it instantly gratifying to play. Due to its suspended nature, moving a single finger bar up and down the neck will yield a series of suspended chords, maintaining a consistent harmonic feel. For example, barring all strings at the 2nd fret would give a C#sus2, and at the 7th fret, an F#sus2. This makes it incredibly intuitive for songwriting, as a simple shape can generate complex-sounding progressions. The repetition of notes also makes it highly conducive to creating sympathetic resonance and drone effects, truly living up to its creator's description. It's a tuning that rewards experimentation and will likely inspire many new musical directions.

Open Bsus2 Tuning Notes:

  • String 6 (Low E): B2
  • String 5 (A): F#3
  • String 4 (D): C#4
  • String 3 (G): F#4
  • String 2 (B): C#5
  • String 1 (High E): C#5

How to Tune to Open Bsus2:

Important Note on String Gauge: Tuning a string more than 4 semitones up or down from its standard pitch can put excessive tension on the string or make it too slack. For movements exceeding this range, it is often advisable to consider using a different string gauge to ensure optimal playability and prevent string breakage.

  • String 6 (Low E): Tune up 7 semitones from E to B2. (Note: This is a significant upward adjustment; consider a heavier gauge string for optimal tension.)
  • String 5 (A): Tune down 3 semitones from A to F#3.
  • String 4 (D): Tune down 1 semitones from D to C#4.
  • String 3 (G): Tune down 1 semitones from G to F#4.
  • String 2 (B): Tune up 2 semitones from B to C#5.
  • String 1 (High E): Tune down 3 semitones from E to C#5.
