BGDGBD Bgdgbd - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
This unique tuning, known as Bruno Major's Home Tuning, is famously featured in his song "Home". It transforms the standard guitar sound into a rich, resonant landscape, providing a distinctive tonal palette for fingerstyle and open-chord playing.
Verbal Analysis:
When played open, this tuning produces the notes B-G-D-G-B-D from low to high strings. These notes collectively form a G major triad (G-B-D) with B as the lowest, most prominent bass note, creating a G major chord in its second inversion (G/B). This gives the tuning an inherently warm and inviting major tonality, despite the deep drop on the lowest string. The repetition of G and B across the strings enhances resonance and makes it exceptionally intuitive for playing open and barre chords. Sliding a single finger across all strings (barring) will instantly create other major chords, making it very accessible for songwriting and improvisation. For instance, barring at the second fret would yield an A major chord. The deep B1 on the lowest string provides a profound, grounding bass, adding significant depth to the overall sound.
Technical Analysis:
The tuning notes are B1-G2-D3-G3-B3-D4. Compared to standard EADGBe tuning (E2-A2-D3-G3-B3-E4), several strings are significantly altered:
- String 6 (Low E) is tuned down by a Perfect 4th (7 semitones) to B1.
- String 5 (A) is tuned down by a Whole Step (2 semitones) to G2.
- Strings 4, 3, and 2 (D, G, B) remain unchanged at D3, G3, B3 respectively.
- String 1 (High E) is tuned down by a Whole Step (2 semitones) to D4.
The resulting interval structure from low to high is: Minor 6th (B1-G2), Perfect 5th (G2-D3), Perfect 4th (D3-G3), Major 3rd (G3-B3), Minor 3rd (B3-D4). This creates a wide and harmonically rich voicing across the open strings. The substantial drop on the 6th string to B1 makes this tuning resonate deeply and provides a strong foundation for the chordal voicings.
How to Tune:
When tuning your guitar to BGDGBD, please refer to the following instructions. For optimal stability and tone, especially with significant drops, ensure your guitar is properly set up. Please note that string movements exceeding -4 or +4 semitones may require a different string gauge to prevent damage or maintain playability. The following instructions are based on the provided string movement data.
- String 6 (Low E String): Tune down 5 semitones to B1. (Warning: This is a significant drop. If starting from standard E2, you would tune down 7 semitones. Adjusting 5 semitones from an implied D2 is still a large change. Consider a heavier gauge string for this low B note.)
- String 5 (A String): Tune down 2 semitones to G2.
- String 4 (D String): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones) to D3.
- String 3 (G String): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones) to G3.
- String 2 (B String): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones) to B3.
- String 1 (High E String): Tune down 2 semitones to D4.
Here are the notes for each string, from the lowest (6th) to the highest (1st):
- String 6: B1 (the lowest note, a deep and resonant B)
- String 5: G2 (a full G, providing the root of the open G major chord)
- String 4: D3 (the fifth of the open G major chord)
- String 3: G3 (an octave higher G, reinforcing the root)
- String 2: B3 (an octave higher B, completing the G major triad)
- String 1: D4 (the highest note, an octave higher D, adding sparkle to the chord)
