CDFGDG C D F G D G - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
Tuning Analysis: C D F G D G
The 'C D F G D G' tuning presents a radical departure from standard guitar tunings, transforming the instrument into a deeply resonant and open sound canvas. Verbally, this tuning evokes a spacious, almost droning quality, ideal for atmospheric textures, expansive folk melodies, or even heavy, sustained riffs. Its unique intervallic structure encourages exploration beyond conventional chord shapes, making it a fertile ground for avant-garde, ambient, or alternative music styles.
Technically, the open strings are set to C2, D2, F2, G2, D3, G3, from the lowest (6th) to the highest (1st) string. When analyzed from the root C, the intervals are: Root (C), Major 2nd (D), Perfect 4th (F), Perfect 5th (G), Major 9th (D - an octave above the D2), and Octave Perfect 5th (G - an octave above the G2). This combination does not form a standard major or minor triad. Instead, it most closely resembles a C9sus4 (C-F-G with an added 9th, D). The presence of two D notes and two G notes across different octaves provides a rich, sustained harmonic foundation. Due to this unique voicing, striking all open strings creates an expansive, somewhat suspended sound. While traditional chord shapes will be recontextualized, barring across any fret will reveal entirely new chordal possibilities and resonant drones. Its very open nature means that even simple melodic lines can sound complex and full.
How to Tune: C D F G D G
This tuning requires significant adjustments from standard EADGBe, with most strings tuned down considerably. Due to the extreme negative semitone movements (exceeding 4 semitones down on all strings), it is highly recommended to use a heavier gauge string set. This will help maintain proper string tension, improve intonation, and ensure the strings remain playable without excessive floppiness or the risk of damage to your instrument's setup. Always tune down slowly and carefully.
- String 6 (Low E to C2): Tune down 4 semitones.
- String 5 (A to D2): Tune down 7 semitones.
- String 4 (D to F2): Tune down 9 semitones.
- String 3 (G to G2): Tune down 12 semitones (a full octave).
- String 2 (B to D3): Tune down 9 semitones.
