CEGACE Common C6 - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
This is the classic C6 tuning, often referred to as "Hawaiian" or "Western Swing" tuning. It's a sweet, melodic, and versatile tuning that immediately conjures images of steel guitar and warm, resonant tones.
Technically, the open strings form a full C6 chord, specifically C-E-G-A-C-E (from low to high). This inherent structure makes it incredibly easy to play major, minor, and dominant 7th chords by simply barring across the fretboard, especially when using a slide. The wide intervals, particularly in the lower strings (C2 to E2, then G3), provide a rich, full sound. The higher strings offer clear melodic possibilities and close voicings (A3-C4-E4). This tuning is excellent for lap steel and pedal steel guitar, but also offers a unique sonic palette for standard guitar, allowing for lush voicings and easy access to common chord shapes up and down the neck. Its harmonic foundation makes it intuitive for improvisation in genres like blues, country, jazz, and folk music.
Open String Notes:
- String 6 (Lowest): C2

How to Tune to Common C6 from Standard EADGBe:
- String 6 (E2): Tune down 4 semitones to C2. Note: Tuning down 4 semitones is a significant change. Consider using a heavier gauge string for optimal tension and tone.
- String 5 (A2): Tune down 5 semitones to E2. Note: Tuning down 5 semitones is a significant change. Consider using a heavier gauge string for optimal tension and tone.
- String 4 (D3): Tune up 5 semitones to G3. Note: Tuning up 5 semitones is a significant change. Consider using a lighter gauge string to avoid excessive tension and potential string breakage.
- String 3 (G3): Tune up 2 semitones to A3.
- String 2 (B3): Tune up 1 semitone to C4.
- String 1 (E4): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones). It remains E4.
