Tuning Overview: Eb Standard (9-String)
"Eb Standard", also commonly referred to as "1 step down", is a popular uniform down-tuning specifically for a 9-string guitar. This tuning is widely adopted across various genres, including rock, metal, blues, and pop, offering a slightly deeper, richer tonal quality compared to standard tuning while preserving the fundamental relationships between strings.
Technical Analysis
In Eb Standard, every string on your 9-string guitar is tuned down by exactly one semitone (a half-step) from its original standard tuning pitch. This results in the entire instrument being transposed down by a half-step. The open strings are tuned to:
- 9th String: C1
- 8th String: F1
- 7th String: A#2
- 6th String: D#3
- 5th String: G#3
- 4th String: C#4
- 3rd String: F#4
- 2nd String: A#4
- 1st String: D#5
The primary benefit of this uniform down-tuning is that all your familiar chord shapes, scales, and arpeggios remain functionally identical. If you play a G major chord shape, it will still be a major chord, but it will sound as a Gb major (a semitone lower). This makes the transition to Eb Standard relatively straightforward for players already comfortable with standard tuning, as muscle memory is largely preserved. The slightly decreased string tension can also facilitate easier string bending and a slinkier feel, contributing to the "heavier" or "darker" sonic aesthetic often associated with this tuning.
While the open strings of this 9-string tuning don't form a simple major or minor chord across all strings, the uniformity allows for easy transposition. The tuning is particularly well-suited for playing in keys that revolve around Eb major or C minor, as these keys will now naturally align with more comfortable open positions and standard chord voicings shifted down. Open power chords (e.g., a low C, G, C shape on the 9th, 6th, and 4th strings respectively, corresponding to Eb-Bb-Eb in concert pitch) will be readily available and provide a powerful, resonant foundation.
How to Tune to Eb Standard (9-String)
To achieve the Eb Standard tuning, you will need to lower the pitch of each string by one semitone from its original standard tuning note. Ensure you use a reliable chromatic tuner.
- 9th String (Lowest): Tune down 1 semitone to C1.
- 8th String: Tune down 1 semitone to F1.
- 7th String: Tune down 1 semitone to A#2.
- 6th String: Tune down 1 semitone to D#3.
- 5th String: Tune down 1 semitone to G#3.
- 4th String: Tune down 1 semitone to C#4.
- 3rd String: Tune down 1 semitone to F#4.
- 2nd String: Tune down 1 semitone to A#4.
- 1st String (Highest): Tune down 1 semitone to D#5.
Given that each string is only being tuned down by a single semitone, your guitar's current string gauge should be perfectly suitable for this tuning. There is no significant increase or decrease in string tension that would necessitate a change in string gauge, which is typically advised only for movements exceeding four semitones up or down.
String 9 (Lowest): C1
String 8: F1
String 7: A#2
String 6: D#3
String 5: G#3
String 4: C#4
String 3: F#4
String 2: A#4
String 1 (Highest): D#5
