CGDEGE Open Cadd9 - Guitar tuning, chords & scales

Description - Open Cadd9

just occurred to me as an idea, and thought i'd use it to play something new and came here to find the chord shapes only to find out that this tuning isn't available here.

Tuning Analysis: Open Cadd9

This unique tuning, aptly named "Open Cadd9", immediately presents a rich, full sound when strummed open. As described by the user, it emerged as an idea for playing something new, and it certainly delivers on that promise. The low C and G strings provide a deep, resonant foundation, while the higher E and G strings add brightness and shimmer. It's a tuning that encourages exploration, making familiar chord shapes feel fresh and inspiring new melodic ideas.

Verbal Analysis

Open Cadd9 offers a spacious and somewhat melancholic yet hopeful sound, thanks to the inherent Cadd9 chord. The wide intervals, particularly the low C, give it a substantial presence, making it ideal for acoustic fingerstyle, ambient textures, or even driving rock riffs where a full, droning low end is desired. The open C, G, D, E, G, E configuration lends itself beautifully to sympathetic resonance, creating a lush, ringing quality. It's a very 'playable' open tuning, meaning that much of the expressive potential lies in simply fretting across a single fret to create new chords. This could be particularly inspiring for songwriters looking for new harmonic landscapes beyond standard tuning.

Technical Analysis

The open strings ring out as C2-G2-D3-E3-G3-E4, which clearly outlines a Cadd9 chord (C - E - G with an added D for the 9th). This makes it incredibly easy to achieve a full Cadd9 voicing with just an open strum. Because of the open C and G notes on the lowest strings, barre chords across the entire neck become very powerful, instantly forming C-based chords or their relatives. For example, a barre on the 2nd fret would yield a Dadd9, and on the 3rd fret, an Ebadd9.

The arrangement of the D3-E3-G3 notes on the middle strings (4th, 3rd, 2nd) creates interesting intervallic relationships. The D to E is a major second, and E to G is a minor third. This clustering of notes allows for easy Sus2 (D-E) or minor triad (D-E-G forms an Em) shapes with minimal finger movement. The two E's (E3 and E4) and two G's (G2 and G3) across different octaves provide a natural depth and shimmer, enhancing the chord's resonance.

The significant drops on the 6th, 5th, 3rd, and 2nd strings create a much lower overall tension compared to standard tuning, which can make bending easier but may require a heavier gauge string set to maintain optimal intonation and prevent fret buzz, especially on the 6th and 2nd strings which are tuned down 4 semitones.

How to Tune

To achieve Open Cadd9 from standard EADGBe tuning, follow these steps with care:

  • String 6 (Low E): Tune down 4 semitones from E2 to C2. Please be cautious with this significant drop; a heavier gauge string may be advisable to maintain tension and intonation.
  • String 5 (A): Tune down 2 semitones from A2 to G2.
  • String 4 (D): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones). This string remains D3.
  • String 3 (G): Tune down 3 semitones from G3 to E3.
  • String 2 (B): Tune down 4 semitones from B3 to G3. Again, this is a substantial drop, so consider using a heavier gauge string for optimal performance.
  • String 1 (High E): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones). This string remains E4.

String 6 (Low E): C2 (C two octaves below middle C)

String 5 (A): G2 (G two octaves below middle C)

String 4 (D): D3 (D one octave below middle C)

String 3 (G): E3 (E one octave below middle C)

String 2 (B): G3 (G one octave below middle C)

String 1 (High E): E4 (E above middle C)
