CGFG#A#F | CGFA♭B♭F CAL - Guitar tuning, chords & scales

Description - CAL

just tired to regular tuning, so i experiment with the tune

This unique tuning, aptly named "CAL's Experimental Tuning," stems from a desire to break free from traditional guitar voicings, as indicated by the creator's note: "just tired of regular tuning, so I experimented with the tune." It certainly delivers an unconventional sound palette, combining a profoundly low bass with a dense, chromatically rich upper register. This makes it an intriguing choice for musicians looking to explore avant-garde, heavy, or atmospheric genres.

Technical Analysis

The open strings of this tuning are C2 G2 F3 G4# A4# F4. This configuration deviates significantly from standard tuning and presents a fascinating blend of wide intervals and tight clusters. The 6th string drops to a resonant C2, providing a very deep and powerful foundation. The 5th string (G2) creates a perfect fifth interval with the 6th string, which is excellent for thick power chords and drone effects on the lowest two strings.

Moving up the neck, the tuning features an F3 on the 4th string, creating a minor seventh interval with the G2, and an octave F4 on the 1st string. This octaved F can be highly effective for melodic lines, unison bends, or creating sustained, ringing tones. The most striking and challenging aspect, however, lies in the middle strings: G4# on the 3rd string and A4# on the 2nd string. These notes are only a semitone apart, creating a highly dissonant, chromatically charged interval that will dramatically influence chord voicings and lead lines.

Open String Chords & Voicings

  • Lower Register Power: The C2-G2 (6th and 5th strings) forms a strong perfect fifth, ideal for heavy, sustained power chords. Adding the F3 (4th string) creates a C-G-F structure, reminiscent of a Csus4 or F/C chord, providing a rich, grounded harmonic base.
  • Dissonant Core: The G4# (3rd string) and A4# (2nd string) create a tight minor second. This interval can be highly effective for bluesy slides, jazz fusion, or experimental soundscapes. It's not conducive to conventional major/minor chord shapes across these strings, pushing the player towards more open, sparse voicings or melodic improvisation.
  • Octave Potential: The F3 (4th string) and F4 (1st string) offer an open octave, which can be used for ringing arpeggios, melodic emphasis, or creating a sense of spaciousness.
  • Implied Harmony: The full open tuning (C G F G# A# F) creates a complex, extended sonority. It doesn't readily conform to a simple major or minor triad, instead leaning towards a dense, potentially atonal, or highly colored chord, perfect for ambient textures or modern classical approaches.

Playing Considerations

  • Fingerings: Standard chord shapes will need significant re-learning due to the altered intervals, especially the tight G#4-A#4 cluster. This encourages exploration of new voicings and single-note lines.
  • Genre Suitability: This tuning is highly suited for experimental music, heavy rock, metal (especially with the low C), drone music, or any style where unconventional harmonies and textures are desired. It might be challenging for traditional folk or pop styles without significant adaptation.
  • Melodic Opportunities: The octaved Fs and the strong C-G bass provide good anchors for melodic development, while the G# and A# offer unique melodic tension and release points.

Tuning Notes

String 6 (Low E String): C2
String 5 (A String): G2
String 4 (D String): F3
String 3 (G String): G4#
String 2 (B String): A4#
String 1 (High E String): F4

How to Tune

To achieve CAL's Experimental Tuning, please start from standard EADGBe tuning (from low E to high e) and follow these adjustments:

  • String 6 (Standard E2): Tune down 4 semitones to C2. This is a significant drop, so proceed carefully and ensure your guitar can handle the lower tension.
  • String 5 (Standard A2): Tune down 2 semitones to G2.
  • String 4 (Standard D3): Tune up 3 semitones to F3. Exercise caution when tuning up multiple semitones, as this increases string tension.
  • String 3 (Standard G3): Tune up 1 semitone. This adjustment from standard G3 would result in G#3. However, the target note for this tuning is specified as G4#. Achieving G4# from standard G3 would require tuning up 13 semitones (an octave plus one semitone), which is an extreme tension increase and not recommended for standard string gauges due to the high risk of string breakage and potential neck damage. We advise aiming for G#3 unless you are specifically equipped with appropriate string gauges and guitar setup for such a large octave shift.
  • String 2 (Standard B3): Tune down 1 semitone. This adjustment from standard B3 would result in A#3. However, the target note for this tuning is specified as A4#. Achieving A4# from standard B3 would require tuning up 11 semitones (or tuning down to A#3 then up an octave). This is an extreme tension increase and not recommended for standard string gauges. We advise aiming for A#3 unless you are specifically equipped with appropriate string gauges and guitar setup for such a large octave shift.
  • String 1 (Standard E4): Tune up 1 semitone to F4.

Important String Gauge Advisory:

When making significant tuning changes, particularly those involving movements of 4 or more semitones (either up or down), it is crucial to consider using a different string gauge. This helps maintain proper string tension, intonation, and prevents potential damage to your guitar's neck or bridge. For this "CAL's Experimental Tuning," the substantial drop of 4 semitones on String 6 and the extreme octave shifts implied by the target notes for String 3 and 2 (G4# and A4# if attempted) strongly suggest using a custom string set with appropriate gauges to safely accommodate these tensions.
