guitar can be mystifying,
but if you learn some fundamentals
everything will come fast like magic...

basic things to keep in mind: it's all about 5's;
-5 shapes (of major, minor, and dominant chords),
-5 scale patterns,
-and the minor pentatonic scale (penta = 5)
and you will be well on your way to at least understanding 90% of music from the western hemisphere and you can pick it up quick and create your own...and people will then constantly give you high 5's :)
truth be told, you don't have to know this stuff to create your own "music", cuz rumor has it that eddie van halen never took lessons, but i think that's a half-truth AND learning this fundamental info really helps you understand - and will give you the tools to get involved in a great variety of musical endeavors...and can shoot you light years ahead. but to each his own.
