C#ADGBE | D♭ADGBE Rockwell Church - Guitar tuning, chords & scales

Description - Rockwell Church

Used by Rockwell Church on Geneva

Verbal Analysis: The Rockwell Church Tuning

The Rockwell Church Tuning offers a powerful and deep sonic foundation while preserving the familiar melodic and harmonic possibilities of standard tuning for the majority of the strings. By significantly dropping the lowest string, this tuning immediately provides a heavier, more resonant bass register, ideal for driving rock riffs, metal, or adding a rich, dark texture to any piece. It's a pragmatic tuning choice for guitarists who want to extend their instrument's low range without having to completely relearn all their chord shapes and scales on the higher strings. The name itself, "Rockwell Church," hints at a potentially grand or resonant sound, fitting for the extended low end.

Technical Analysis: C# A D G B E

This tuning is a modification of standard EADGBe, specifically an adaptation where the lowest E string (String 6) is tuned down three semitones to C#3. The remaining five strings (A2, D3, G3, B3, E4) retain their standard pitch, meaning the intervals between them are identical to standard tuning.

  • String 6 (Low E to C#3): Tuned down a minor third (3 semitones). This is the key defining characteristic, providing a deep, guttural bass note.
  • String 5 (A2): Remains standard.
  • String 4 (D3): Remains standard.
  • String 3 (G3): Remains standard.
  • String 2 (B3): Remains standard.
  • String 1 (High E4): Remains standard.

The open notes are C# A D G B E. While the top five strings retain their standard relationships (perfect fourths, major third between G and B, then a perfect fourth), the interval between the 6th and 5th strings is now a Major 6th (C# up to A is 8 semitones). This means traditional "drop" power chord shapes (where the lowest three strings are often root-fifth-octave) won't apply directly to the open strings to form a simple open power chord. However, this tuning excels in other areas:

  • Chords on Higher Strings: All standard chord shapes and scales typically played on strings 5 through 1 remain completely unchanged and playable. This is a huge advantage for guitarists not wanting to re-learn their entire fretboard.
  • Power Chords: A power chord rooted on the 6th string (e.g., C#5) can be formed by playing the open 6th string (C#) and fretting the 5th string at the 4th fret (G#) and the 4th string at the 6th fret (C#). Alternatively, single-finger power chords with the root on the 6th string are easily achievable by fretting the 6th string and then using standard power chord shapes relative to that fret on the 5th and 4th strings (e.g., to play a D5 power chord, fret the 6th string at the 2nd fret for D, the 5th string at the 5th fret for A, and the 4th string at the 7th fret for D).
  • Bass Enhancement: The open C# can serve as a powerful bass note for chords like A major/minor (creating an A/C# inversion), D major/minor (adding a C# as a specific harmonic tension), or as a solid root for progressions in C# minor or E major.

How to Tune Your Guitar

To achieve the Rockwell Church Tuning, tune your guitar strings to the following notes. Begin from the thickest (6th) to the thinnest (1st) string, making the specified adjustments from standard tuning (EADGBe):

  • String 6 (Originally E3): Tune to C3#. Tune down 3 semitones.
  • String 5 (Originally A2): Tune to A2. Keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
  • String 4 (Originally D3): Tune to D3. Keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
  • String 3 (Originally G3): Tune to G3. Keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
  • String 2 (Originally B3): Tune to B3. Keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
  • String 1 (Originally E4): Tune to E4. Keep as is; no change (0 semitones).

Note on String Gauge: When tuning a string down significantly (more than 4 semitones) or up (more than 4 semitones), it is generally advised to consider using a different gauge string to maintain optimal tension and tone, and to prevent potential damage. For this tuning, only the 6th string is adjusted by 3 semitones, which typically falls within the safe range for standard gauge strings. However, always exercise care when adjusting string tension.
