Jules Tuning: A Shoegaze-Inspired Wall of Sound
Inspired by the dense, ethereal soundscapes of My Bloody Valentine's "Lose My Breath," Jules Tuning offers a rich and resonant foundation for sonic exploration. The name itself, as the creator notes, doesn't carry a specific meaning, allowing the sound to speak for itself. This tuning creates a unique 'wall of sound' character, perfect for genres like shoegaze, dream pop, and ambient music, where sustain and harmonic richness are paramount.
Technical Analysis of the Open Tuning:
The open strings are tuned to C#3 - A#3 - C#4 - F#4 - A#4 - C#5 (low to high).
- The tuning creates a potent open chord, which can be interpreted in a couple of ways:
- As a voicing of F# Major with a low C# bass note (essentially an F# Major chord in 2nd inversion, F#/C#, with additional octave doublings). The notes F# (on the 4th string), A# (on the 5th and 2nd strings), and C# (on the 6th, 3rd, and 1st strings) collectively form this sound.
- From the lowest C# (6th string), the intervals create a C#sus4(add6) feel. The notes are C# (Root), F# (Perfect 4th), and A# (Major 6th). This inherently open and harmonically rich structure avoids the strong pull of a typical major or minor triad.
- The repeated C# and A# notes across different octaves contribute to a thick, layered texture, making open chords incredibly resonant and harmonically full.
- The intervals between adjacent strings, such as the perfect fourth between C#4 and F#4 (strings 4 & 3) and minor thirds between A#3 and C#4 (strings 5 & 4) and A#4 to C#5 (strings 2 & 1), provide interesting harmonic tension and melodic possibilities.
Chords and Playability:
With the open strings offering a complex F# Major / C#sus4(add6) sound, this tuning is ripe for expansive chord voicings and drone-like textures. Barre chords will naturally yield variations of this harmonic structure, allowing for easy exploration of different keys while retaining the characteristic richness. Strumming all open strings will produce a full, shimmering chord. The unique intervals, especially the wide minor 6th on the lowest strings, encourage unique fingerings. Experimenting with two or three-finger chord shapes will likely uncover distinctive voicings not easily achieved in standard tuning, particularly effective for creating dense, sustained sonic washes.
How to Tune Your Guitar:
To achieve the Jules Tuning from standard EADGBe, follow these steps. Please use a reliable tuner and tune carefully, as string tension will change significantly.
- 6th String (Low E): Tune down 3 semitones to C#3. Caution: Tuning down three semitones will noticeably loosen the string, potentially affecting intonation and feel.
- 5th String (A): Tune up 1 semitone to A#3.
- 4th String (D): Tune down 1 semitone to C#4.
- 3rd String (G): Tune down 1 semitone to F#4.
- 2nd String (B): Tune down 1 semitone to A#4.
- 1st String (High E): Tune down 3 semitones to C#5. Caution: Tuning down three semitones will noticeably loosen the string, potentially affecting intonation and feel.
