C#FFGCF | D♭FFGCF Jerkcurb - Morpheus' Arms - Guitar tuning, chords & scales

Description - Jerkcurb - Morpheus' Arms

This is the turning used in my personal transcription of Jerkcurb - Morpheus' Arms. But I'm not sure if it's the one he actually uses.

This intriguing tuning, originally noted as a personal transcription for "Jerkcurb - Morpheus' Arms," presents a unique sonic landscape on the guitar. It moves far beyond conventional tunings, offering a blend of deep resonance, captivating dissonance, and a sense of dreamlike suspension.

Verbal Analysis

The core of this tuning is a powerful F drone, echoed across multiple strings (F2, F3, F4). This creates a rich, sustained foundation that can be both grounding and expansive. Overlaid on this drone is the striking presence of C♯ (specifically C♯3 on the 6th string), which forms an augmented 5th or minor 6th interval with the root F. This specific interval gives the tuning a mysterious, slightly haunting quality, pushing it into an evocative, non-diatonic harmonic space. The G note further adds a suspended 2nd element, softening some of the sharp edges while maintaining a beautiful tension. It's a tuning that encourages ambient textures, open, ringing harmonies, and a departure from standard chord shapes, making it ideal for experimental or atmospheric music.

Technical Analysis

The open strings are tuned to C♯3, F2, F3, G3, C4, F4 from the lowest (6th) to highest (1st) string. When arranged from lowest pitch to highest, the unique set of notes available are F, C♯, G, and C. This forms an Fsus2 chord with an added augmented 5th (C♯) or a minor 6th, giving it a distinctive character.

  • Open Chords and Harmonies: Strumming all open strings yields a complex Fsus2(#5) or Fsus2(b6) sound, rich with tension and an ethereal quality. Muting the 6th string (C♯3) reveals a strong Fsus2 (F-G-C), providing a versatile base for melodic exploration. The open F notes (F2, F3, F4) act as a strong drone, enhancing sustain and resonance.
  • Chord Shapes: Traditional major and minor barre chords will not translate directly in this tuning. However, the unique intervals open up new sonic possibilities. Simple two-finger shapes can create compelling power chords (e.g., F-F octave on strings 5 and 4) or intriguing dissonances (e.g., F-C♯ on strings 5 and 6). The top three strings (G3, C4, F4) form an Fsus2 arpeggio, making it easy to craft melodic lines or arpeggiated figures.
  • Dissonance and Resolution: The inherent tension created by the C♯ against the Fs can be used to great effect, offering unique opportunities for dissonant textures and unexpected resolutions.

How to Tune

To achieve the "F Augmented Sus2 Drone" tuning from standard EADGBe, follow these steps carefully, paying attention to the semitone adjustments. Please note that significant changes in tension may require string gauge adjustments for optimal playability and tone.

  • 6th String (Low E): Tune down 3 semitones to C♯3.
  • 5th String (A): Tune down 4 semitones to F2. Note: Tuning down 4 semitones is a substantial drop. While generally safe, monitor string tension and intonation. A heavier gauge string could improve tone and stability if staying in this tuning for extended periods.
  • 4th String (D): Tune up 3 semitones to F3. Caution: Tuning up 3 semitones puts significant tension on the string. For prolonged use or if you experience discomfort, a lighter gauge string for this position might be advisable.
  • 3rd String (G): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones) to G3.
  • 2nd String (B): Tune up 1 semitone to C4.
  • 1st String (High E): Tune up 1 semitone to F4.

  • 6th String: C♯3
  • 5th String: F2
  • 4th String: F3
  • 3rd String: G3
