C#G#F#C#G#C# | D♭A♭G♭D♭A♭D♭ Boogie C - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
The "Boogie C" tuning is a unique and resonant setup for your Guitar, directly inspired by Mike Dawes' intricate composition "Boogie Shred". This tuning centers around a bright C# tonality, providing a distinct sonic landscape for fingerstyle and percussive techniques.
Technical Analysis:
The open strings are tuned to C#3 - G#3 - F#3 - C#4 - G#4 - C#5. Analysing these notes:
- String 6 (Low): C#3 (The root note of the tuning)
- String 5: G#3 (A perfect fifth above the root C#)
- String 4: F#3 (A perfect fourth above the root C#, also the 11th)
- String 3: C#4 (An octave above the root C#)
- String 2: G#4 (An octave above the perfect fifth G#)
- String 1 (High): C#5 (A double octave above the root C#)
This configuration essentially forms a rich, open C#add11 chord (C#-F#-G#) across the open strings, providing a full and resonant sound. The consistent C# and G# notes, coupled with the F#, create a harmonic environment that is both familiar and exotic, perfect for intricate melodic and harmonic work.
Due to this open C#add11 voicing, many chords become easily accessible. Barring all strings at any fret will instantly yield an 11th chord, shifted chromatically up the neck. For instance, fretting all strings at the second fret will give you a D#add11. This characteristic makes the tuning highly suitable for slide guitar, drone-based music, or percussive fingerstyle where open strings ring out.
The significant drop in tension on the lower strings (4th and 3rd) compared to standard tuning allows for easier bending and vibrato, offering a more expressive playing experience. However, players should be mindful of the potentially slacker feel and adjust their attack accordingly to avoid intonation issues.
How to Tune:
To achieve the "Boogie C" tuning, you will adjust your strings from their standard pitch according to the following movements:
- String 6 (Low E equivalent): Tune down 3 semitones to C#3.
- String 5 (A equivalent): Tune down 1 semitone to G#3.
- String 4 (D equivalent): Tune down 8 semitones to F#3. Caution: Tuning down 8 semitones is a significant change; a different gauge string may be advisable for optimal tension and playability.
- String 3 (G equivalent): Tune down 6 semitones to C#4. Caution: Tuning down 6 semitones is a substantial change; a different gauge string may be advisable for optimal tension and playability.
- String 2 (B equivalent): Tune down 3 semitones to G#4.
- String 1 (High E equivalent): Tune down 3 semitones to C#5.
Remember to always tune carefully, especially when making large adjustments to string tension.
