DACGCE Layover - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
The "Layover" tuning for the Guitar is a wonderfully resonant and introspective open tuning. It transforms the standard EADGBe into D-A-C-G-C-E, offering a unique sonic landscape perfect for fingerstyle, ambient textures, and rich harmonic explorations.
Technically, this tuning is built upon a strong C Major harmony (C-G-C-E) across the middle and treble strings, powerfully supported by a D and A in the bass. The open strings themselves form a complex yet inviting sonority, with the notes D, A, C, G, C, E. This combination lends itself beautifully to open C major or G major voicings, often with added suspended or extended qualities due to the D and A. For instance, the full open tuning can be heard as a lush C6/9 (C-E-G-A-D), or a Gsus4 with an added C in the bass. It offers an easy entry into lush harmonic structures, making it highly expressive and inspiring for songwriting. The lowered bass strings provide a deep, grounding presence, while the upper strings remain bright and articulate.
No extreme string tension changes are required for this tuning, as all adjustments are within a safe range, making it suitable for standard string gauges.
Here are the notes for each string in Layover tuning:
- String 6 (low E): D2
- String 5 (A): A2
- String 4 (D): C3
- String 3 (G): G3
- String 2 (B): C4
- String 1 (high E): E4
How to Tune to Layover
To achieve the Layover tuning from standard EADGBe, follow these string movements:
- String 6 (Low E): Tune down 2 semitones from its standard E2 to D2.
- String 5 (A): Keep as is; no change from its standard A2 (0 semitones).
- String 4 (D): Tune down 2 semitones from its standard D3 to C3.
- String 3 (G): Keep as is; no change from its standard G3 (0 semitones).
- String 2 (B): Tune up 1 semitone from its standard B3 to C4.
- String 1 (High E): Keep as is; no change from its standard E4 (0 semitones).
All string adjustments are minor, so a standard set of guitar strings will be suitable for this tuning.
