DADADFAD Quadruple D Minor - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
The Quadruple D Minor tuning for an 8-string guitar is a deeply resonant and expressive setup designed to facilitate expansive eight-string chords centered around D Minor, intricate finger-picked arpeggios, and the creation of rich, sustained textures or drones reminiscent of traditional instruments like the Tanpura or Sitar.
Technically, this tuning stacks the D minor arpeggio (D-F-A) across four octaves, from D1 on the lowest string up to D4 on the highest. The open strings are configured as D1, A1, D2, A2, D3, F3, A3, D4. This arrangement means that simply strumming all open strings will produce a full and vibrant D minor chord, making it exceptionally easy to immediately access the desired harmonic foundation.
The prevalence of D and A (root and fifth) across multiple octaves creates a powerful drone effect, offering a canvas for melodic and rhythmic exploration without losing the harmonic center. The F3 on the third string is crucial, providing the minor third interval that defines the D minor tonality. This tuning naturally lends itself to open-string voicings that can be easily shifted up the neck for different minor keys. Due to the repeated intervals and the open D minor chord, fingerpicking patterns can be very fluid and harmonically rich, as many notes of the D minor scale are already present in the open strings. The structure also makes it convenient to form large, resonant chords with minimal effort, especially those centered around the root and fifth, while allowing for easy access to the minor tonality.

How to Tune
To achieve the Quadruple D Minor tuning, follow these adjustments. Please note the recommended string gauge considerations for significant pitch changes:
- 8th String (Lowest): Tune to D1, tuning it down 4 semitones. Caution: For changes of 4 semitones or more, a different gauge string is advised to maintain optimal tension and tone.
- 7th String: Tune to A1, tuning it down 2 semitones.
- 6th String: Tune to D2, tuning it down 2 semitones.
- 5th String: Tune to A2. Keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
- 4th String: Tune to D3. Keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
- 3rd String: Tune to F3, tuning it down 2 semitones.
- 2nd String: Tune to A3, tuning it down 2 semitones.
