DADFGC DADFGC - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
The DADFGC tuning is a deeply resonant and versatile setup for your guitar, perfectly living up to its description as being "cool for an emo-ish sound with a pretty cool twist to it". This tuning immediately creates a rich, complex Dm11 (D minor eleventh) chord when strummed open, offering a sound that is both melancholic and full, ideal for atmospheric or introspective compositions.
Technical Analysis:
- The open strings are tuned to D2-A2-D3-F3-G3-C4 (low to high).
- The foundational D minor 7th chord (D-F-A-C) is fully present across the open strings. The addition of the G on the second string completes the Dm11 voicing, giving it a jazzy, suspended, or deeply emotive quality.
- The low three strings (D-A-D) form a powerful, open D5 chord, perfect for heavy, droning riffs and driving rhythm parts, reminiscent of Drop D tunings but with an even more open feel.
- The interval from the 6th string (D) to the 5th string (A) is a perfect fifth, and from the 5th string (A) to the 4th string (D) is a perfect fourth, creating a solid bass foundation.
- The intervals on the higher strings (D3-F3 is a minor third, F3-G3 is a major second, G3-C4 is a perfect fourth) provide interesting melodic and harmonic possibilities, allowing for unique arpeggios and voicings that deviate from standard tunings.
Chords and Playability:
- Beyond the inherent open Dm11, the low D-A-D setup makes it incredibly easy to play power chords by barring the lowest three or four strings, creating a full and powerful sound with minimal effort.
- The consistent minor 3rd interval between the 4th (D) and 3rd (F) strings, combined with the minor 7th (C) on the high string, opens up possibilities for rich minor and dominant 7th voicings by moving familiar shapes.
- Due to the significant drops on the high E and B strings (now C and G respectively), unique chord shapes will emerge, and familiar fingerings will produce entirely new harmonic results, encouraging experimentation.
- This tuning is particularly well-suited for fingerstyle playing where the resonance of the open Dm11 can be fully explored, or for rhythm guitar seeking a thick, atmospheric wall of sound.
Tuning Notes (Low to High):
String 6 (Low E): Tune to D2
String 5 (A): Tune to A2
String 4 (D): Tune to D3
String 3 (G): Tune to F3
String 2 (B): Tune to G3
String 1 (High E): Tune to C4
How to Tune:
- String 6 (Low E): Tune down to D (2 semitones down).
- String 5 (A): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
- String 4 (D): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
- String 3 (G): Tune down to F (2 semitones down).
- String 2 (B): Tune down to G (4 semitones down). Note: Tuning down 4 semitones is a significant drop; consider using a slightly heavier gauge string if you experience too much slack or intonation issues.
