DADF#BE Guitar Tuner
DADF#BE | DADG♭BE Jfip - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
This unique tuning, known as 'jfip' (likely short for Jigsaw Falling Into Place), is indeed inspired by Radiohead's song. It offers a distinct sonic landscape, blending deep resonance with unusual string relationships, creating a rich and somewhat dark harmonic texture.
Technical Analysis:
This is a custom tuning for a standard six-string guitar. At its core, it establishes a D major chord across the bottom four strings (D-A-D-F#), reminiscent of Drop D variants but with a flattened third string. The most striking feature is the second string, which is tuned down an entire octave, leading to a very deep and almost bass-like quality in that register.
Open Chords and Harmonic Possibilities:
- When strummed open, the tuning (D2 A2 D3 F#4 B2 E4) forms a D major 6/9 chord, but with a profoundly low B2 in the middle. The combination of D-A-D-F# naturally provides a strong D major foundation.
- The low B2 creates an interesting interval, adding a rich, resonant extension to the D major chord. This B could also suggest a B minor 7th voicing if approached from a different harmonic perspective.
- The overall voicing is dark and expansive, perfect for arpeggiated figures or droning chords that utilize the open strings' sympathetic resonance. Power chords on the lower strings will be particularly resonant due to the D-A-D structure.
How to Tune:
Please be mindful of string tension, especially for the second string's significant drop in pitch.
- 6th String (Low E): Tune down 2 semitones to D2. (E to D)
- 5th String (A): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones) to A2.
- 4th String (D): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones) to D3.
- 3rd String (G): Tune down 1 semitone to F#4. (G to F#)
- 2nd String (B): Tune down 12 semitones to B2. This is a full octave drop. For optimal playability and to prevent the string from being excessively loose, a much heavier gauge string is strongly advised for this string. Tuning down this far with a standard gauge string may result in a very floppy and difficult-to-play string. (B3 to B2)
- 1st String (High E): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones) to E4.
