DADGBD Double Drop D - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
Description - Double Drop D
Also known simply as double drop D is an alternative guitar tuning: E strings are tuned down (dropped) one whole step (2 frets) to D rather than E as in standard tuning (EADGBE). The main use for double dropped d is so guitarists can play 5th chords with one finger on the bass strings and play the treble side of a barré chord. A well-known recording that makes effective use of this tuning is Cinnamon Girl by Neil Young and I Hate California by Jonathan Coulton.
Also known simply as Double Drop D, this is an alternative guitar tuning where both E strings are tuned down (dropped) one whole step (2 frets) to D, rather than E as in standard tuning (EADGBE). This tuning provides a powerful resonance and makes certain chord voicings exceptionally accessible. Its main advantage is allowing guitarists to play 5th chords (power chords) with one finger on the bass strings, and simultaneously facilitating the treble side of barre chords.
A well-known recording that makes effective use of this tuning is 'Cinnamon Girl' by Neil Young, and it's also featured in 'I Hate California' by Jonathan Coulton.
Technical Analysis & Chord Possibilities:
With the open strings tuned to D-A-D-G-B-D, Double Drop D offers a rich sonic landscape. Strumming all open strings yields a beautiful Dsus2 chord, providing a full, resonant sound. The symmetrical tuning of both E strings to D creates a deeply resonant open D. The presence of D-A-D on the lowest three strings makes it incredibly easy to play root-fifth power chords by simply barring across these strings with one finger. This opens up possibilities for heavy riffs and driving bass lines, particularly in the key of D. The standard G-B-D on the higher strings allows for familiar voicings, while the dropped D strings allow for unique lead lines and chord extensions. The overall tuning strongly supports keys of D major/minor, and related modes, offering a robust foundation for songwriting and improvisation.
How to Tune to Double Drop D:
Please follow these instructions carefully. While the string movements for this tuning are relatively minor, always exercise caution when tuning, especially when significantly changing string tension. For changes exceeding 4 semitones up or down, considering a different string gauge is advisable, though not strictly necessary for this particular tuning.
