DGDDAD DGDDAD-tuning - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
The DGDDAD-tuning is a deep and resonant open tuning for the Guitar, providing a versatile sonic landscape. It creates a powerful, droning quality, especially through the multiple D notes across the fretboard. This tuning is excellent for styles requiring a rich, open sound, such as folk, blues, open-string arpeggios, or ambient soundscapes. The arrangement of notes allows for both ringing open chords and easy exploration of melodic ideas.
Technically, the open strings sound as D G D D A D (from low to high). This combination of notes forms a powerful D suspended 4th chord (D-G-A) with a strong D drone. Alternatively, it can be perceived as a G suspended 2nd chord (G-A-D) with a foundational D in the bass, offering a rich and ambiguous harmonic palette. The open tuning naturally presents a strong fifth (D-A) and fourth (D-G) relationship, making both D-based and G-based chord voicings easily accessible with minimal fretwork. Simple one-finger barre chords can produce powerful major or minor sounds, while the droning D strings add depth to any progression. The repetition of the D note across three different octaves (D2, D3, D4) and two unison D3s creates an incredibly full and sustained sound, perfect for slide guitar or percussive techniques.
Common chords that become easily accessible or are implied by the open tuning include various voicings of Dsus4, D5 (power chord), Gsus2, and with minor adjustments, full G major or D minor/major chords.
How to Tune
To achieve the DGDDAD-tuning from standard EADGBe tuning, follow these adjustments:
- 6th String (Low E): Tune down 2 semitones to D2.
- 5th String (A): Tune down 2 semitones to G2.
- 4th String (D): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones) to D3.
- 3rd String (G): Tune down 5 semitones to D3. Caution: Tuning down 5 semitones is a significant change. If you plan to use this tuning frequently, consider using a heavier gauge string for the 3rd string to maintain optimal tension and prevent floppiness.
- 2nd String (B): Tune down 2 semitones to A3.
- 1st String (High E): Tune down 2 semitones to D4.
6th String (Low E): D2
5th String (A): G2
4th String (D): D3
3rd String (G): D3
2nd String (B): A3
1st String (High E): D4
