The Deep Octave Drop Bass tuning plunges your electric bass into an incredibly low, seismic register, creating a truly earthquake-like foundation for your sound. This tuning redefines what a bass can achieve, pushing the boundaries into sub-harmonic frequencies that are often felt as much as they are heard.
Technically, this tuning sets your strings to E0, A0, D1, G1. This maintains the traditional perfect fourth intervals found in standard EADG bass tuning, but shifts the entire range down by a full octave. For instance, your lowest E string (E0) resonates at approximately 20.6 Hz, an entire octave below the standard E1. This makes it an ideal choice for genres demanding an ultra-heavy, dark, or ambient sonic landscape, such as doom metal, drone, experimental music, or film scores seeking profound low-end impact.
Due to the consistent perfect fourth intervals, a bassist familiar with standard EADG tuning will find their fingerings and scale patterns largely transferable, simply operating in a much deeper register. While the open strings themselves (E0, A0, D1, G1) do not readily form a conventional open chord in a typical guitar sense, they provide a powerful tonal center. For instance, playing the open E0 can serve as a massive fundamental for an E minor or C major seventh chord played further up the neck, creating incredibly thick and resonant voicings.
Achieving and maintaining this tuning will require specialized equipment, including an amplifier and speakers capable of reproducing such low frequencies, and crucially, a very heavy gauge set of strings designed for extreme drop tunings to maintain adequate tension and intonation.
Tuning Notes:
- 4th String (Lowest): E0
- 3rd String: A0
- 2nd String: D1
- 1st String (Highest): G1
How to Tune:
To achieve the Deep Octave Drop Bass tuning, you will be significantly dropping the pitch of each string. Please exercise caution and consider using heavier gauge strings to prevent damage to your instrument and ensure proper tension.
- 4th String (E0): Starting from an implied B0, tune down 9 semitones to E0.
- 3rd String (A0): Starting from an implied F#1, tune down 9 semitones to A0.
- 2nd String (D1): Starting from an implied B1, tune down 9 semitones to D1.
- 1st String (G1): Starting from an implied E2, tune down 9 semitones to G1.
Important Note: Tuning down 9 semitones for each string is a very drastic change in tension. It is highly recommended to use a much heavier gauge string set specifically designed for extreme drop tunings. Tuning down more than 4 semitones (a major third) or up more than 4 semitones from a string's intended pitch can cause poor intonation, loss of tone, or even damage to the neck or bridge of your instrument. Consult with a luthier if unsure about string gauge selection for such an extreme tuning.
