EADGBEAD Be All Easy - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
Description - Be All Easy
Can't believe this wasn't already in the database. Standard tuning but down an octave to work on 8 string. Can now play all your favorite songs that are in standard tuning an octave lower on your extended range guitars. Now you can say you at least know how to play 6out of 8 strings in a single song...
This tuning, which we'll call 8-String Octave Standard, is an incredibly versatile and powerful configuration for extended-range guitarists. It's designed to bring the familiar feel and intervalic relationships of standard EADGBe tuning into the much lower registers of an 8-string instrument. This allows players to transpose their entire repertoire, from classic rock riffs to complex jazz voicings, down an entire octave, opening up a world of deep, resonant sonic possibilities.
Verbal Analysis
The core concept behind this tuning is simple yet profound: it mimics a standard 6-string guitar tuned to EADGBe, but every string is dropped an octave. This means that any chord shape, scale pattern, or lick you know on a standard guitar fretboard remains entirely transferable, now delivered with an incredible depth and weight. It's perfect for genres like metal, djent, and progressive rock where a massive low-end foundation is crucial, but it also allows for creative exploration in jazz or ambient music by leveraging the extended range. The addition of two higher strings (A3 and D4) beyond the 'standard 6' gives it an unexpected upper register, providing a unique blend of guttural lows and sparkling highs.
Technical Analysis
The full tuning, from the lowest (8th) to the highest (1st) string, is E1-A1-D2-G2-B2-E3-A3-D4. The most notable feature is that the first six strings (E1, A1, D2, G2, B2, E3) perfectly match the relative intervals of standard EADGBe tuning, but are transposed down an entire octave. For instance, the lowest E1 string is two octaves below the E2 of a standard 6-string guitar, and the E3 string is an octave below the high E4. The 7th string (A3) and 8th string (D4) extend the upper range, providing a perfect fourth (A3) and a perfect fifth (D4) above the E3 string respectively, further enhancing the instrument's harmonic breadth.
Open Chords and Accessible Shapes
- Standard Chords: The beauty of this tuning lies in its direct translation of standard EADGBe. All open chords (E, A, D, G, C, Em, Am, Dm, etc.) and barre chord shapes are immediately available and playable, simply sounding an octave lower. An open E Major chord (0-2-2-1-0-0) will resonate as a colossal E Major, profoundly deep.
- Full Open Strum: Strumming all eight open strings (E1 A1 D2 G2 B2 E3 A3 D4) produces a rich, dark E minor 7 add 11 chord (E, G, B, D, A). This provides an incredibly full and atmospheric voicing straight from the open strings.
- Power Chords: The consistent standard tuning intervals across the lower strings make power chords incredibly easy to form and exceptionally powerful. All standard power chord shapes are directly transferable and will sound exceptionally heavy.
- Scales and Arpeggios: Players familiar with standard tuning will find all their scale and arpeggio patterns directly applicable. This consistency greatly reduces the learning curve for adapting to an 8-string instrument.
How to Tune
To achieve the '8-String Octave Standard' tuning, we'll assume you are starting from a common 8-string standard tuning of F#1 B1 E2 A2 D3 G3 B3 E4. Follow these steps carefully:
- String 8 (Lowest E): Tune down 2 semitones from F#1 to E1.
- String 7 (A): Tune down 2 semitones from B1 to A1.
- String 6 (D): Tune down 2 semitones from E2 to D2.
- String 5 (G): Tune down 2 semitones from A2 to G2.
- String 4 (B): Tune down 3 semitones from D3 to B2.
- String 3 (E): Tune down 3 semitones from G3 to E3.
- String 2 (A): Tune down 2 semitones from B3 to A3.
- String 1 (Highest D): Tune down 2 semitones from E4 to D4.
Important Note on String Gauge: All tuning adjustments for this configuration involve tuning down by 2 or 3 semitones. These movements are generally within the safe operating range for standard string gauges designed for 8-string guitars. However, always exercise caution and listen to your strings as you tune. For any tuning changes exceeding 4 semitones up or down, or if you notice excessive tension/looseness, considering a different string gauge is advisable, though not strictly necessary for this particular tuning.
