EADG#BD# | EADA♭BE♭ Lizard's Tuning - Guitar tuning, chords & scales

Description - Lizard's Tuning

my cousin made it up for a song she made, and told me the tuning required

The "Lizard's Tuning" is an exceptionally unique and experimental guitar tuning, conceived by the creator's cousin for a specific song. It deviates significantly from standard guitar tuning, particularly on the higher strings, resulting in a distinct and somewhat dissonant sonic landscape.

Technical Analysis:

The open strings are tuned as follows, from lowest to highest pitch:

  • 6th String (Low E): E2 (Standard Pitch)
  • 5th String (A): A2 (Standard Pitch)
  • 4th String (D):Gtdb_ai_gen D3 (Standard Pitch)
  • 3rd String (G): G4# (Significantly Higher than Standard)
  • 2nd String (B): B3 (Standard Pitch)
  • 1st String (High E): D5# (Significantly Higher than Standard)

While the lower E, A, D, and B strings maintain their standard pitches, the 3rd (G) and 1st (high E) strings are tuned to unusually high frequencies. The 3rd string, G4#, is an octave and one semitone higher than its standard G3 pitch, and the 1st string, D5#, is an octave and one semitone higher than its standard E4 pitch. These extreme upward tunings on standard string gauges are generally not recommended due to the high risk of string breakage and potential damage to the instrument. Specialized very light gauge strings would typically be required to safely achieve these pitches.

The open string notes are E, A, D, G#, B, D#. When played together, this combination forms a highly complex and dissonant chord. Analyzing it from an E root (E G# B D# D A), it contains a Major 3rd (G#), Perfect 5th (B), Major 7th (D#), and also a minor 7th (D) and a Perfect 4th (A). The simultaneous presence of both a Major 7th (D#) and a minor 7th (D) relative to the root E creates a polytonal or highly suspended quality, rendering it unsuitable for conventional major or minor open chord voicings. This indicates an intentional design for specific melodic or harmonic textures rather than traditional strumming.

Verbal Analysis & Chordal Implications:

This tuning is not designed for easy access to common open chords; instead, it demands an exploratory approach. The lower E, A, and D strings can provide a stable, standard foundation, while the drastically higher G# and D# strings offer bright, almost harp-like or piercing tones. This juxtaposition creates a unique sonic canvas. Players might find themselves gravitating towards single-note lines, drones on the lower strings, or two- and three-string chord fragments that avoid the dissonant open full chord. Shapes that incorporate the standard lower strings with selective use of the very high upper strings could yield interesting results, perhaps favoring arpeggiated patterns or unconventional harmonic clusters. Due to its experimental nature, familiar chord shapes will likely need significant re-interpretation or will be entirely unavailable in their usual forms.

How to Tune to Lizard's Tuning:

These instructions describe the adjustments needed from standard E-A-D-G-B-E tuning. Please proceed with caution, especially with any upward tuning, and regularly check your tuning with a reliable tuner.

  • 6th String (Low E): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
  • 5th String (A): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
  • 4th String (D): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
  • 3rd String (G): Tune up 1 semitones (from G to G#).
  • 2nd String (B): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
  • 1st String (High E): Tune down 1 semitones (from E to D#).

Important Note on Discrepancy: While the above "How to Tune" instructions, based on the provided string movements, describe minor adjustments (tuning the 3rd string up 1 semitone to G#3 and the 1st string down 1 semitone to D#4 from standard tuning), the target notes listed in the 'Tuning Notes' section (G4# and D5#) imply a much more radical change. To reach G4# from a standard G3, you would need to tune up 13 semitones (an octave and a semitone), and to reach D5# from a standard E4, you would need to tune up 11 semitones. These are extreme pitch increases that are highly likely to break standard guitar strings and are not achievable with the minor adjustments described. If the G4# and D5# notes are truly the intended target, specialized, much lighter gauge strings would be essential, and the provided string movements would only serve as a conceptual guide rather than a literal tuning method from standard gauge strings.

The open notes for "Lizard's Tuning" are as follows, from the 6th (lowest) string to the 1st (highest) string:

  • 6th String: E2
  • 5th String: A2
  • 4th String: D3
  • 3rd String: G4#
  • 2nd String: B3
  • 1st String: D5#
