EBGDAE Flipped Standard - Guitar tuning, chords & scales

Description - Flipped Standard

This tuning is made mostly by 5ths, except between the fifth and fourth string which is an interval of 6th. It's made by flipping the standard tuning, to expand the range on the lower register. It's an old idea of mine, but recently i've noticed that other people on the internet are trying it.

This tuning, aptly named 'Flipped Standard,' is an intriguing exploration of sonic possibilities on the guitar. As its creator notes, it's an 'old idea' that has recently garnered attention, designed primarily to expand the range on the lower register. This reconfiguration offers a deeper, more resonant foundation for your playing, inviting discovery of novel chord voicings and melodic paths that depart from conventional guitar setups.

Technically, the tuning is built predominantly on perfect fifths, creating a powerful and consistent harmonic structure across most strings. Specifically, starting from the lowest string, the intervals are: a Perfect 5th (E1-B1), followed by a minor 6th (B1-G2) between the fifth and fourth strings, and then three consecutive Perfect 5ths (G2-D3, D3-A3, A3-E4). This 'mostly 5ths' arrangement, broken by the minor 6th, gives the tuning its distinctive character.

The open strings (E1, B1, G2, D3, A3, E4) form a rich Em9 chord (E-G-B-D-A) with a low E root and an additional E on the highest string. This configuration makes for a very full, resonant E minor sound when strummed open, particularly on the lower strings where an Em triad (E-B-G) is clearly present. The prevalence of fifths also means that power chords are easily accessible and sound particularly robust across the fretboard. The significantly lower E1 on the thickest string truly delivers on its promise to expand the lower register, providing a deep, impactful bass foundation unlike standard tuning.

How to Tune Your Guitar to Flipped Standard

To achieve the Flipped Standard tuning, please adjust each string according to the following instructions. Always tune carefully and gradually:

  • String 6 (Lowest String): Tune up 3 semitones to reach E1.
  • String 5: Keep as is; no change (0 semitones) to remain at B1.
  • String 4: Tune up 3 semitones to reach G2.
  • String 3: Keep as is; no change (0 semitones) to remain at D3.
  • String 2: Tune up 2 semitones to reach A3.
  • String 1 (Highest String): Keep as is; no change (0 semitones) to remain at E4.

Important Note on String Tension: For the 6th and 4th strings, which require tuning up 3 semitones, please proceed with care as this increases string tension. These adjustments are generally manageable with standard gauge strings, but always monitor your guitar's neck and string stability. Should you consistently tune up by 5 semitones or more, or down by 5 semitones or more (i.e., movements that exceed +/- 4 semitones), considering an alternative string gauge is highly recommended to prevent potential damage or ensure optimal playability and intonation.

String 6: The lowest string is tuned to E1, providing a deep, resonant bass.

String 5: The fifth string is tuned to B1.

String 4: The fourth string is tuned to G2.

String 3: The third string is tuned to D3.

String 2: The second string is tuned to A3.

String 1: The highest string is tuned to E4, matching the standard high E.
