EDGGBE Spider - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
Verbal and Technical Analysis
The tuning provided is known as 'Spider Tuning', described as an introduction to the guitar with a unique character. Its open string configuration is E2 D3 G3 G3 B3 E4, from the lowest (6th) to the highest (1st) string.
Technically, this tuning is a powerful and resonant open E minor 7th chord. Strumming all open strings will immediately produce a full E minor 7th sound. The notes are organized as follows: E (root) on the 6th and 1st strings, D (minor 7th) on the 5th string, G (minor 3rd) on the 4th and 3rd strings, and B (perfect 5th) on the 2nd string.
This configuration makes it incredibly versatile for playing minor 7th chords across the fretboard. By simply barring all strings at any given fret, you can easily transpose the open E minor 7th into other minor 7th chords (e.g., a barre at the 1st fret yields an F minor 7th, 3rd fret for G minor 7th, 5th fret for A minor 7th, and so on). The presence of unison G notes on the 4th and 3rd strings offers a thick, resonant texture and can facilitate unique melodic phrasing or drone effects. The minor 7th (D) on the 5th string is easily accessible and provides a strong bluesy or jazzy flavor to the open chord, making this tuning suitable for a variety of contemporary styles.
How to Tune
To achieve the 'Spider Tuning' from standard guitar tuning (E-A-D-G-B-e), carefully follow these instructions for each string:
- String 6 (Low E): Tune to E2. Keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
- String 5 (A): Tune to D3. This requires tuning up 5 semitones from its standard A2. Important: Tuning up 5 semitones significantly increases string tension. For sustained use of this tuning, especially if you experience frequent string breakage or excessive tension, considering a lighter gauge string for your 5th string is strongly advised.
- String 4 (D): Tune to G3. This requires tuning up 5 semitones from its standard D3. Important: Similar to the 5th string, tuning up 5 semitones is a substantial increase in tension. We recommend considering a lighter gauge string for your 4th string if you intend to use this tuning regularly to prevent premature string wear or breakage.
- String 3 (G): Tune to G3. Keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
- String 2 (B): Tune to B3. Keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
- String 1 (High e): Tune to E4. Keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
Always tune gradually and monitor your guitar's neck and string tension. If you notice any unusual bowing or discomfort, consult a luthier.
- String 6: E2 (Lowest string, E an octave below middle C)
- String 5: D3 (D below middle C)
- String 4: G3 (G below middle C)
- String 3: G3 (Same G as String 4)
- String 2: B3 (B below middle C)
- String 1: E4 (Highest string, E above middle C)
