EG#DF#CE Guitar Tuner
EG#DF#CE | EA♭DG♭CE D9-5 - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
Originating from an experimental approach to scales, this unique guitar tuning, which we've named Dianora's Open D9add#11, presents a rich and complex harmonic landscape. It moves beyond conventional chord shapes, inviting players to explore new sonic textures and voicings. This tuning is ideal for those looking to break free from standard tunings and delve into a more modern, perhaps jazzy or avant-garde sound. The combination of its core D9 elements with a pronounced augmented fourth creates a distinct, open resonance that is both familiar and strikingly fresh.
Technical Analysis
The open strings are tuned to E2, G#3, D3, F#4, C4, E4. Interpreting this tuning with D (D3) as a central root, we observe the following structure:
- D (Root): Provided by the 4th string (D3).
- F# (Major Third): From the 3rd string (F#4), an octave above the expected third.
- C (Minor Seventh): On the 2nd string (C4).
- E (Major Ninth): Present on the 1st string (E4) and as a low pedal tone on the 6th string (E2).
These notes (D, F#, C, E) form a D9 chord, specifically a D9-5 (D9 without its perfect fifth). However, the inclusion of G#3 on the 5th string introduces an Augmented Fourth or Augmented Eleventh (#11). This G# adds a distinct color and dissonance that pushes the tuning beyond a simple D9. The lowest string being E2 also functions as a deep major ninth, adding considerable depth and resonance to the overall voicing.
The intervals between strings are notably wide and varied: 16 semitones (E2 to G#3), -6 semitones (G#3 to D3), 17 semitones (D3 to F#4), -6 semitones (F#4 to C4), and 4 semitones (C4 to E4). These unusual leaps, including two tritone intervals (-6 semitones), contribute significantly to the open and sometimes dissonant character of the tuning, demanding an adventurous approach to playing.
Open Chords & Voicings
Played open, this tuning produces a complex, rich chord that can be interpreted as a D9 chord with an augmented 4th/11th and a low E pedal tone. The absence of a perfect fifth (A) further accentuates the #11. This means that even simple strumming will yield a sophisticated, full-bodied sound, perfect for atmospheric pieces or modern compositions.
Due to the large and irregular intervals, traditional chord shapes will not translate directly. Instead, players can explore:
- Partial Barres: Barring across specific groups of strings can highlight the D9 (D, F#, C, E) and its extensions. For instance, barring strings 4-1 will give you a core D9-5 voicing.
- Arpeggios: The widely spaced notes lend themselves well to arpeggiated figures, revealing the tuning's unique harmonic qualities.
- Melodic Exploration: The 'scale experimentation' aspect of its creation suggests it's fertile ground for developing distinctive melodic lines that interact creatively with the open string harmonies. The G# allows for Lydian-esque or even altered dominant sounds when combined with D as a root.
- Dissonant Harmony: The tritone intervals (G#3-D3 and F#4-C4) are a powerful tool for creating tension and release, adding an edgy, contemporary feel to your music.
Open String Notes:
String 6: E2
String 5: G#3
String 4: D3
String 3: F#4
String 2: C4
String 1: E4
How to Tune from Standard EADGBe:
- String 6 (Low E): E2 - Keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
- String 5 (A): Tune down 1 semitone from A3 to G#3.
- String 4 (D): D3 - Keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
- String 3 (G): Tune down 1 semitone from G4 to F#4.
- String 2 (B): Tune up 1 semitone from B3 to C4.
- String 1 (High E): E4 - Keep as is; no change (0 semitones).
All string movements are minor (within 1 semitone up or down). This means a standard gauge string set should perform well without issues, and no special considerations for string tension or breakage are necessary for this tuning.
