FA#D#G#CF | FB♭E♭A♭CF Standard Semi Up - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
The Standard Semi Up tuning transforms your Guitar into a brighter, slightly higher-pitched instrument while maintaining the familiar intervallic relationships of standard tuning. This tuning is essentially Standard EADGBe tuning, but every string is precisely tuned up by one semitone. This means all your existing chord shapes, scales, and licks will translate directly, but they will sound a semitone higher in pitch.
Technical Analysis:
Technically, this tuning raises the entire instrument by a single semitone. The open string notes become F2-A#3-D#4-G#4-C4-F4 (from low to high). This uniform shift makes it highly intuitive for players accustomed to standard tuning, as the fretboard geometry remains identical. It’s perfect for vocalists who find standard pitch slightly too low, or for matching a guitar to instruments tuned slightly sharper than concert pitch without retuning those other instruments or using a capo.
Open Chords and Playability:
Because the relative intervals between strings are preserved, all standard chord shapes remain playable, but their root notes are transposed up by a semitone. For example:
- An open E major chord shape becomes an F major chord.
- An open A major chord shape becomes an A# (Bb) major chord.
- An open D major chord shape becomes a D# (Eb) major chord.
- An open G major chord shape becomes a G# (Ab) major chord.
- An open C major chord shape becomes a C# (Db) major chord.
Similarly, minor chords and other voicings will follow the same pattern. This tuning offers a fresh sonic palette while retaining complete familiarity in terms of fingering. String tension will be slightly increased, but a single semitone increase is generally safe for most standard guitar string gauges without requiring a change in string gauge.
Tuning Notes:
6th String (Low E): F2
5th String (A): A3#
4th String (D): D4#
3rd String (G): G4#
2nd String (B): C4
1st String (High E): F4
How to Tune:
6th String (Low E): Tune to F2 by tuning up 1 semitone.
5th String (A): Tune to A3# by tuning up 1 semitone.
4th String (D): Tune to D4# by tuning up 1 semitone.
3rd String (G): Tune to G4# by tuning up 1 semitone.
2nd String (B): Tune to C4 by tuning up 1 semitone.
1st String (High E): Tune to F4 by tuning up 1 semitone.
Note: Tuning each string up by one semitone is generally safe for most standard guitar string gauges. However, always exercise caution when increasing string tension.
