FCFCGCEG FCFCGCEG - Guitar tuning, chords & scales

Description - FCFCGCEG

my own hybrid trying to get the best out of: Open Fmaj9 (FACGCE), Open Aadd4 (DAEAC#E) and Open Dadd9(DADF#AE). Extending them Up and Downwards based on the 7-5-4 cadences included in each of these 6 String Tunings.
7th String C2 can be dropped to A1 depending on the mood of the Song.
I use a .007 gauge string for the g4 at 25.5" Scale-lenght, you might wanna Drop the whole Tuning by a half-step to further prevent string breakage.

Cadence Weave: A Hybrid Open Tuning for 8-String Guitar

Verbal Analysis

The 'Cadence Weave' is a sophisticated and highly versatile 8-string guitar tuning, meticulously crafted as a hybrid drawing inspiration from popular open tunings like Open Fmaj9 (FACGCE), Open Aadd4 (DAEAC#E), and Open Dadd9 (DADF#AE). The creator's intention was to extend the harmonic and melodic possibilities of these established voicings, with a particular emphasis on incorporating rich 7-5-4 cadences across the expansive range of an 8-string instrument.

This tuning offers an incredibly broad sonic palette, starting from a deep, resonant low F1 and ascending to a bright, chiming high G4. This wide range provides a solid foundation for complex chord voicings and intricate melodic work. A unique feature highlighted by the designer is the flexibility of the 7th string (C2), which can be optionally dropped to A1, offering different harmonic starting points and emotional textures depending on the musical context.

Musicians exploring Cadence Weave should be aware of the considerable tension on some of the higher strings due to the upward tuning. The designer specifically recommends using a .007 gauge string for the G4 (1st string) at a 25.5" scale length to manage this tension and suggests considering dropping the entire tuning by a half-step if string breakage becomes a concern or for personal preference in playability.

Technical Analysis

The open strings of the Cadence Weave tuning are configured as follows, from lowest (8th) to highest (1st) string:

  • String 8: F1
  • String 7: C2
  • String 6: F2
  • String 5: C3
  • String 4: G3
  • String 3: C4
  • String 2: E4
  • String 1: G4

When strummed open, this tuning presents a rich, extended Fmaj9 chord (F-C-E-G) with multiple octaves and perfect fifths reinforcing the root and fifth. The presence of F1, C2, F2, C3, and C4 provides a very strong and resonant F major tonality, supported by the G3 and G4 which introduce the 9th, and E4 providing the major 7th. This inherent Fmaj9 sonority offers immediate access to lush, jazz-influenced harmonies right out of the box, making it excellent for ambient textures, fingerstyle, and open chord work.

The generous repetition of F and C notes, along with the C-G perfect fifth intervals, makes the tuning highly conducive to building power chords and suspended voicings with minimal effort. Chords related to F major, C major, and G major will find many accessible shapes and voicings across the fretboard. The '7-5-4 cadences' mentioned in the tuning's description suggest that the intervallic relationships are optimized for progressions featuring dominant 7ths, perfect fifths, and major thirds, allowing for fluid harmonic movement and a distinctive, resonant character.

How to Tune Your 8-String Guitar to Cadence Weave:

To achieve the 'Cadence Weave' tuning from a standard 8-string setup (commonly F#-B-E-A-D-G-B-E), follow these steps carefully:

  • String 8 (Lowest String): If starting from F#1, tune down by 1 semitone to reach F1.
  • String 7: If starting from B1, tune up by 1 semitone to reach C2.
  • String 6: If starting from E2, tune up by 1 semitone to reach F2.
  • String 5: If starting from A2, tune up by 3 semitones to reach C3.
  • String 4: If starting from D3, tune up by 5 semitones to reach G3. Caution: Tuning up by 5 semitones is a significant change and can put considerable tension on the string. A heavier gauge string may be advisable to prevent breakage and optimize tone.
  • String 3: If starting from G3, tune up by 5 semitones to reach C4. Caution: Tuning up by 5 semitones is a significant change. Consider using a heavier gauge string to maintain string integrity and enhance playability.
  • String 2: If starting from B3, tune up by 5 semitones to reach E4. Caution: Tuning up by 5 semitones is a significant change. A heavier gauge string is strongly recommended for this upward adjustment to prevent breakage and improve tone.
  • String 1 (Highest String): If starting from E4, tune up by 3 semitones to reach G4.

Important Gauge and Tension Advice: The creator specifically notes using a .007 gauge string for the G4 (1st string) at a 25.5" scale length. For any string requiring a tuning adjustment of 5 semitones or more (upwards or downwards), particularly for the higher strings (String 4, 3, and 2 in this tuning), it is highly recommended to consider using a different string gauge better suited for the increased tension. Alternatively, dropping the entire tuning by a half-step might alleviate stress on the strings and prevent premature breakage, while still maintaining the unique intervallic relationships of the Cadence Weave.
