GDADGB Super Drop Tuning D Over G - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
Description - Super Drop Tuning D Over G
The tuning submitter app wouldn't allow me to enter the actual tuning. The low G is actually G2. So the tuning is G2 D3 A3 D4 G4 B4.
It's used to get super serious about down and dirty plus it basically allows you to play almost all rhythms bass style. Baritone guitar and strings required to keep G2 in tune. I don't suggest using this on a floating tremolo system. Can be done but requires mass set up.
Verbal Analysis
This is an extremely low and rich open G Major tuning, perfectly suited for a powerful, "down and dirty" sound. The deep G2 and D2 notes create an immense foundational rumble, making it ideal for heavy riffing and a unique bass-like rhythmic approach, as the submitter aptly describes. It evokes a massive, resonant soundscape, perfect for genres like doom metal, stoner rock, or any style demanding a truly deep and impactful sonic presence. The repeating G and D notes across the lower strings build a natural, powerful drone effect that fills out the sound considerably.
Technical Analysis
The tuning established, derived from the string movements, is G2 D2 G2 D3 G3 B3. This configuration creates a complete G Major chord (G-B-D) across all six open strings, with multiple octaves of G and D providing extraordinary depth and resonance. The interval structure from the lowest to highest string is as follows:
- String 6 (G2) to String 5 (D2): Perfect 5th (up)
- String 5 (D2) to String 4 (G2): Perfect 4th (up)
- String 4 (G2) to String 3 (D3): Perfect 5th (up)
- String 3 (D3) to String 2 (G3): Perfect 4th (up)
- String 2 (G3) to String 1 (B3): Major 3rd (up)
This arrangement significantly simplifies chord playing; a single finger barring across all six strings will immediately produce a full Major chord at any fret position (e.g., 5th fret barred gives a C Major chord). The extreme low notes, especially G2 and D2, necessitate the use of a baritone guitar and/or very heavy gauge strings to maintain proper intonation and tension. This tuning is not recommended for guitars with floating tremolo systems due to the extensive setup required for such drastic string tension changes.
Open Chords & Shapes
- Open Strings (0-0-0-0-0-0): Produces a full G Major chord (G-B-D), offering immediate rich harmony.
- Barre Chords: A single finger barring across all six strings at any fret will yield a Major chord. For instance, barring at the 7th fret produces a D Major chord.
- Root-Fifth Power Chords: Easily achieved on the lower strings (e.g., G2-D2 or G2-D2-G2) with minimal finger movement for an incredibly thick and resonant sound.
- Simple Bass Lines: The low G and D strings make it straightforward to play powerful bass-style rhythms by playing single notes or low intervals, creating a solid rhythmic foundation.
How to Tune (Starting from Standard E: E2 A2 D3 G3 B3 E4)
- String 6 (Low E Equivalent, E2): Tune up 3 semitones to G2. (This movement is within standard string gauge limits.)
- String 5 (A Equivalent, A2): Tune down 7 semitones to D2. (Heavy gauge string advised due to significant tension decrease, exceeding 4 semitones.)
- String 4 (D Equivalent, D3): Tune down 5 semitones to G2. (Heavy gauge string advised due to significant tension decrease, exceeding 4 semitones.)
- String 3 (G Equivalent, G3): Tune down 5 semitones to D3. (Heavy gauge string advised due to significant tension decrease, exceeding 4 semitones.)
- String 2 (B Equivalent, B3): Tune down 4 semitones to G3. (Heavy gauge string advised due to significant tension decrease, as it is 4 semitones.)
- String 1 (High E Equivalent, E4): Tune down 5 semitones to B3. (Heavy gauge string advised due to significant tension decrease, exceeding 4 semitones.)
Due to the extreme nature of these string movements, particularly the drastic drops in pitch on most strings, the use of a baritone guitar and/or a significantly heavier string gauge set is strongly recommended to maintain playability, intonation, and prevent string flop. Care should always be taken when adjusting string tension, especially when tuning up multiple semitones.
String 6 (Lowest): G2
String 5: D2
String 4: G2
String 3: D3
String 2: G3
String 1 (Highest): B3
