GDGCFGC Drop G Modal - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
Description: Drop G Modal
This is a truly unique and deeply resonant 7-string tuning, aptly named "Drop G Modal." It builds upon an intriguing foundation, taking a modal 6-string structure (EADGAD) down a full step to DGCFGC, and then anchoring it with a powerful, rumbling low G on the 7th string. The result is an exciting hybrid, merging the open, droning qualities reminiscent of DADGAD (specifically, CGCFGC here) with the authoritative low-end impact of a Drop G setup. The sonic landscape is rich, dark, and highly versatile, inviting exploration into heavy, atmospheric genres as well as intricate modal fingerstyle compositions.
Technical Analysis:
The open strings are tuned to G1-D2-G2-C3-F3-G3-C4. This configuration establishes a massive, open Gsus4 chord (G-D-G-C-F-G-C) with repeated Gs and Cs, providing a strong harmonic foundation without a major or minor third, giving it a suspended, modal quality.
Open Chords & Reachable Voicings:
- Open Strum: Strumming all seven open strings produces a rich, resonant Gsus4 chord. This provides an immediate, powerful sound for intros or dramatic effect.
- Power Chords: The dropped G (G1) on the 7th string, followed by D2 and G2, makes forming heavy 5th and octave power chords exceptionally easy and impactful on the lowest strings. Simply barring across the lower strings will yield crushing low-end voicings.
- Modal Voicings: The interval structure, particularly the repeated Gs and Cs across the neck, strongly encourages modal playing. Drones are easily achieved, and moving through G modes (Dorian, Aeolian, Phrygian Dominant) feels natural, often by simply adding a minor or major third on an appropriate string.
- Drop-Style Riffs: The 'drop' structure on the lowest strings (G-D-G) allows for familiar heavy riffing and power chord shapes commonly found in drop tunings.
- Upper String Harmonies: The C3-F3-G3-C4 sequence on the middle to high strings offers interesting melodic and harmonic possibilities, akin to DADGAD-style voicings but transposed, allowing for lush open chords and fingerstyle patterns. Barre chords across these upper five strings will frequently yield suspended or minor voicings with a rich, expansive quality.
How to Tune:
This tuning is based on a standard 7-string tuning (B-E-A-D-G-B-e) for its string movements. Please refer to the specific semitone changes for each string below:
- String 7 (Lowest B string): Tune down 4 semitones from B1 to G1. Warning: Tuning down 4 semitones is a significant change. A heavier gauge string is strongly advised for optimal tension, intonation, and tone, as well as to prevent string flop.
- String 6 (E string): Tune down 2 semitones from E2 to D2.
- String 5 (A string): Tune down 2 semitones from A2 to G2.
- String 4 (D string): Tune down 2 semitones from D3 to C3.
- String 3 (G string): Tune down 2 semitones from G3 to F3.
- String 2 (B string): Tune down 4 semitones from B3 to G3. Warning: Tuning down 4 semitones is a significant change. A heavier gauge string is strongly advised for optimal tension, intonation, and tone, as well as to prevent string flop.
- String 1 (Highest E string): Tune down 4 semitones from E4 to C4. Warning: Tuning down 4 semitones is a significant change. A heavier gauge string is strongly advised for optimal tension, intonation, and tone, as well as to prevent string flop.
