ADGCFAD A Standard 7-string - Guitar tuning, chords & scales
Overview: 7-String D Standard Tuning
This tuning, often referred to as "7-String D Standard" or "7-String Whole Step Down," is a powerful and popular choice for guitarists seeking a heavier, darker sonic palette. It involves tuning all seven strings down a whole step (two semitones) from the standard 7-string tuning (B-E-A-D-G-B-E). The resulting lower register provides immense depth and punch, making it a staple in genres like Death Metal, Industrial Metal, and Gothic Metal, as famously utilized by bands such as Obscura, Fear Factory, and Paradise Lost.
Technical Analysis
In 7-String D Standard, the open strings are tuned to A1-D2-G2-C3-F3-A3-D4. This maintains the same interval relationships as standard 7-string tuning, but shifted down by a whole step. This consistency means that chord shapes and scale patterns learned in standard tuning are directly transferable, simply sounding a whole step lower. The open strings themselves present a versatile foundation; the lowest three strings (A-D-G) form a perfect fourth and a perfect fourth, creating a strong root and power chord base. The interval structure of D-G-C-F-A-D (from the 6th string upwards) maintains the standard sequence of fourths, with a major third between the G and B (now G and A) strings, making familiar voicings accessible at a lower pitch. The overall lower string tension (depending on string gauge) can also make bending and vibrato feel smoother, while simultaneously demanding a precise attack to avoid fret buzz and maintain clarity.
Chord Voicings & Accessibility
With all strings lowered uniformly, most standard chord shapes remain playable, but their fundamental pitch will be a whole step lower. For instance, a standard E minor open chord shape (low E, A, D strings) will now sound as a D minor. The open strings themselves offer a dark, resonant quality. Open power chords on the lowest strings (A-D, D-G, G-C) are particularly resonant and easy to achieve. The presence of multiple D and A notes across the tuning (A1, D2, A3, D4) provides strong tonic and dominant foundations for riffs and open string drones. Experimenting with open string voicings, especially across the lowest three strings (A-D-G), can yield very dark and full-sounding chords, ideal for creating heavy ambient passages or powerful, chugging riffs.
How to Tune
To achieve 7-String D Standard tuning from standard 7-string tuning (B-E-A-D-G-B-E), you will lower every string by two semitones. While tuning, ensure to use a reliable tuner and check your intonation after tuning, especially if you are changing string gauges.
- 7th String (Lowest): Tune down 2 semitones from B1 to A1.
- 6th String: Tune down 2 semitones from E2 to D2.
- 5th String: Tune down 2 semitones from A2 to G2.
- 4th String: Tune down 2 semitones from D3 to C3.
- 3rd String: Tune down 2 semitones from G3 to F3.
- 2nd String: Tune down 2 semitones from B3 to A3.
- 1st String (Highest): Tune down 2 semitones from E4 to D4.
Since all strings are being tuned down by only 2 semitones, your current string gauge should generally be sufficient for stability and playability. However, if you experience excessive floppiness, reduced clarity, or fret buzz, considering a slightly heavier gauge set specifically designed for lower tunings could significantly improve both the feel and the sonic characteristics of your guitar.
